Marder III M the one in Saving Private Ryan 1/48

Afternoon MSC ;D I feel its now time for one of those blog things again and after how much encouragement I received with the M1151 I felt confident to do another blog. So with all the 48 kits being built on here I felt I would follow trend and blog another 48 kit that happens to be the Marder III M. Made out of the Czechoslovakian 38t this was a successful tank destroyer that saw action from 1944 onwards.

many of you are well aware of Saving Private Ryan staring Tom Hanks. I watched it when I was a kid and I was blown away the final scene and by the Marder which was disabled by the Molotov cocktail; so here is where I'm at my idea is to replicate the same Marder right before it was disabled but perhaps in a different diorama setting

Moving onto the kit it appears to be near enough a complete scale down from the 1/35 as it is packed with detail and should look rather neat on my shelf along with all the other 48 builds I have done. I started with step 1 which was the construction of the lower hull and the floor of the fighting compartment. Tamiya do include weights which is a much better move than the metal tub hull things which had little or no detail on with step 1 complete I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

I read that Tamiya is dropping several of their 1/48th kits.

Cheers Dicky, I think the trickiest part will be sourcing the 102 as Tamiya only give you 111 but I'm sure it will be no problem fixing some. Tony my good friend, glad to see your on board. Yeah I heard a lot of rumours but no conformation about this. However there are still loads out there so I doubt we will struggle to obtain them anyway!

oh, I'm looking forward to this! And at least one 'real' vehicle which featured in SPR ey ;D

I like the fact that Tamiya includes those weights btw, all should do that ^^

Cheers guys Ok more progress with the rear plate being installed as well as the locking mechanism. The top of the hull temporarily in place to show you what the hull looks like plus it looks like I have made more progress . Also all the running gear, which is tiny has been cleaned up and assembled ready to be installed.

That is the general idea jackwagon but in this case I have lots more bits to glue onto that before I can glue that down . Yeah especially the newer ones like the JS2 and the Panzer II although Tamiya's earlier kits had metal hulls with very little detail but with all the running gear and tracks you wouldn't notice. Hobby Boss T-34s are amazing for a tenner you get a complete interior and engine.

Sorry Dicky, I only part read your reply. Only Tamiya have dipped their toes into the modern 1/4 market with the release of the humvee it would be great if they did release an abrams or something modern!

More progress, moving onto the interior I started with the ammo racks even though they are empty at present Tamiya do give you some spare shells so I will add one or two to add a bit of interest. Moving onto the armour panels it was a simple matter of gluing the racks and adding other details, finally I added a MIG productions figure to show how a figure would fit inside one of these I doubt I will use him as I'm hunting for specific figures for this build.

I've been real busy as of late with decorating my room. So I have had little or no bench time but I did manage to carry on with the Marder and I thought instead of photographing stages I would push on and finish her so here you go..
