I so know what you mean about that mine roller Rich having built that myself. Looks like some excellent progress on both kits.
One bit of info for you concerning the Merk 1. A certain number were converted to what became known as a Merkava 1 Hybrid which had the anti rpg ball and chains and anti slip added to them.

Ethan: i was actually researchin the mk 1 and came across a number of pics of those hybrid Mk1's, which kinda stumped me, as you say they had been retrofitted with the ball & chain as well as anti slip coating. it was a definite option but i have decided against it....i'll explain why in Jaymes answer below. Nemo: cheers bruther, i have officially stepped into the minefield that is 'IDF armour colours'..... ;D already set off a few.....(lucky i made a mine roller ) ;D. so this will definitely slow the pace while i sort out what colour for which period. i have a pretty good baseline from a thread on armourama which specified colours and paint mixes so im gonna mix these up to see what i get (and if i like them?)... fun times! Jaymes: when i started this project i had in mind a couple of objectives, the main being to build a set of Merkava's in the various marks available, one thru to four. As a side category Iv'e decided i'm quite keen to show the vehicles evolution and development as wel,l so for this aspect the mk 1 and 2 willl be early depictions with the 3 and 4 featuring the grip decks and latter updates. Plus as an added bonus, all 4 kits come from differant maufacturers so that gives an extra area for comparison. Gary: may the 'schwartz' be with you too brother! ;D cheers rich

Hi Rich,
ahh yes trying to identify the various versions of the Merkava family. I am not even sure the IDF could identify every version, especially as some modifications are "field applied".
As for the correct colour? I always go with the two IDF Sand Greys that LifeColor produce. These are about as closer as you can get in acrylics and by the time we have added washes, filters, dust and grime they look very different to the basic colour. Just don't get caught in the "it is green" trap. One other thing to add is that the tanks on the Golan Heights look darker than those in the Sinai. This is due to the landscape and strength of the sun, not down to different colours.

Ethan, cheers mate, it was quite intersting reading all the 'opinions' on IDF colour....there are many! but luckily if you read wide enough all of the variations are explained quite well, and yes photo interpretation is at the whim of time of day, lighting conditions and direction, area or region as well as individual vehicle weathering along with age and condition. however i was resonably happy with this assesment which came via IPMS Israel; Current camo (Ramallah look) base: humbrol 84 intense washing with humbrol 98 drybrush, several cotes humbrol 72 sinai campaign humbrol 066 olive 6 Days war 85% humbrol 083 15% humbrol 117 drybrush (humbrol 72) Yom kippur 50% grey green humbrol 092 25% desert buff humbrol 093 25% weiss humbrol 034 Lebanon 50% grey (humbrol 164) 20% dark green (humbrol 163) 15% (humbrol 062) 15% (humbrol 121) or 50% tamiya XF 20 50% tamiya XF 57 now if i discard the YK and 6DW options im left with the lebanon scheme and sinai scheme for the early vehicles and the current (Ramallah) shemes for the later mk 3 & 4. Im familiar with the life colour set but we dont seem to get that brand locally and im happy enough to try and mix up some acrylic colour, using the humbrols as the guide( i see the current colour has a direct tamiya mix option). should be an interesting exercise if nothing else, and im happy to provide the results of teh test for comparo. Leon: thanks Bruther.....only got another 2 complete sets to do for the Mk 3 and 4!......sucker for punishment ay! Prof: thank you, ball and chain is my bain! cheers Rich

Interesting idea of having the armour through the ages. The mk.1 Hybrid often gets confused with the MK 2 Merkava as the improvement program included new side skirts supported by heavy duty springs like the Merkava II, Smoke grenade launchers, improved commanders hatch with a large built in periscope. Also the laser detector mast to the turret. The annoying and frustrating thing with Israeli stuff is, nothing is simple as the developments were done in several stages which is where people often get confused with the MK1 Hybrid and MK2. I know also later Hybrid's were given a new fume extractor for the 105mm gun. I love the Merkava one as its debut was during Operation Peace for Galilee. If you look here you will see close up photo's of the Merkava I and you can see how the paint colour changes due to the light. I really suggest Humbrol 84 straight out the tin. Its Mid stone and works really well You can always lighten or darken it depending on the weathering... Latest update: Fun with paint! being as its mid summer here in NZ, it's been kinda hard to get the modelling mojo going, given the extended daylight hours and hot weather thats been hanging around lately. however i managed to finalise a few things with the merk colours today and concluded my research merkava paint 005 by Brembo2012, on Flickr after consulting the academy instructions i noted the reference to the FS number for the paint, so it was out with the FS 595B fan deck to check out the code. here i have arranged the FS colours with the tamiya acrylic paint mixers, the humbrol colur and the tamiya spray (recommended in their instructions) for the purpose of comparison. merkava paint 004 by Brembo2012, on Flickr after reviewing the recomended colour (FS 30277) i decided to go for a match to the colour one shade above it ( FS 30318). whilst more than happy with the actual colour, for the purposes of painting the model i was keen to have it slightly lighter than original. its not a huge deviation in colour. merkava paint 006 by Brembo2012, on Flickr I then mixed the acylic equivalent to FS30318 using Tamiya acylic's XF 57 Buff & XF 20 Medium grey in roughly 50/50 mix. (perhaps a smidgeon more buff) and then well thinned for airbrush with IPA at about a 35 % ratio. merkava paint 008 by Brembo2012, on Flickr i then made a batch so i had enough to do both Mk1 & 2 tanks , and renamed it 'Sinai grey'. now onto the painting! merkava paint 009 by Brembo2012, on Flickr the first of the shader coats going on....it looks a little washed out from the flash but the last pic will show the final colour well. the tiger chassis is my 'paint mule'. its an old kit i use to test paint mixes and viscosity on...it must have a couple of thousand coats of paint by now. merkava paint 011 by Brembo2012, on Flickr Turret gets the treatment....at this stage it's just about building up light ultra thin coats in layers. merkava paint 013 by Brembo2012, on Flickr base colour completed!....hope to do the Mk 2 tomorrow. thanks for lookin in cheers Rich

Hello Lads, its been a while since i've been able to devote some time to this project. a combination of things has conspired to block my modelling, lets see- a trip over seas, my sons sports(summer codes finishing/winter codes starting), losing my modeldesk at home for 3 weeks, super busy at work with new products, normal family duties, an extended summer season/drought here in NZ and of course there was the England tour of NZ for the last 2 months (cricket-a major distraction)...so, its taken a while to get 'back on track'(pardon the pun) so heres a major update on activities for the merkava firstly, im forging ahead on the Mk1, mainly to try out a whole lotta new stuff but also while i sort markings for the mark 2, so i havent forgotten the mine plough but mostly i will deal with the Tammy kit for the meantime. merkava paint 013 by Brembo2012, on Flickr when i last left i was up to this stage, from here i added a gloss clear cote and the basic kit decals, but in the following images you will see these in place! i got to try out a new gloss cote for this which was the Alclad Aqua Gloss clear. an interesting product, it is milky white, requires no thinning and as the name suggest is water based. my only note on this is that it is very thin and runs easily if you are not attentive...how do i know this? .....because i was not attentive...LOL. but i was able to soak up the odd run with a tissue by wicking it away. models mar 13 017 by Brembo2012, on Flickr you can now see the shiny tank with decals in place, and i will add some colour moduation using the new AK Afghan set, a mix of Iraqi army sand with a little german biege to even out the tone and reduce some of the shading effects...(this is during the process) models mar 13 018 by Brembo2012, on Flickr this is the 'after' shot of the modulation.... models mar 13 021 by Brembo2012, on Flickr this shot shows the difference between the modulated paint on the chassis of the Mk1 and the as yet un-modulated chassis of the Mk 2. models mar 13 019 by Brembo2012, on Flickr Next, i added some colour to the tracks using the Ak tracks and wheels set, this is the light rust colour. models mar 13 020 by Brembo2012, on Flickr next the colour dark rust was spot sprayed on to the tracks to break up the single tone of the first colour and to add some tone variation. being sure to get the colour into the gap on the sand shields. The over spray can be retouched later, altho i decided not to totaly remove all sign of it because this is an area that would naturally spill material out onto the sand shields. models march 2013 3 001 by Brembo2012, on Flickr next was chipping, i used the sponge method with italeri (Vallejo) paints for this, starting first with dark green and then adding darker areas in matt black. models march 2013 3 002 by Brembo2012, on Flickr detail of turret minor chipping... and also below on the front of the tank... models march 2013 3 003 by Brembo2012, on Flickr From here, i added larger chips by hand, again using the matt black. i quite like to add the odd large chip amongst a nest of smaller chips. while some times they are by themselves....mix it up and try to keep things looking random whilst observing that the high wear areas should appear more chipped. models march 2013 3 004 by Brembo2012, on Flickr and now onto streaking..... models march 2013 3 006 by Brembo2012, on Flickr here im laying in the AK enamel light rust streaks, you'll notice i went back in and tided up the track over spray leaving just a hint of the track colour behind... models march 2013 3 007 by Brembo2012, on Flickr next i added another layer of streaking using the DAK colour, here im 'stumping in' the streaks with AK neat white spirits models march 2013 3 008 by Brembo2012, on Flickr the finished sand skirt panels, i then carried this process down into the wheels and also onto the top of the vehicle.... models march 2013 3 009 by Brembo2012, on Flickr the turret looks a little agricultural here, but it all comes out in the wash! (LOL) models march 2013 3 010 by Brembo2012, on Flickr working on the stumping of the wash on the turret.... models march 2013 3 011 by Brembo2012, on Flickr a quick sneak peak at the progress so far ( wash still wet in this pic) i'll leave this to dry overnite ready for the next session... good to be back in the saddle cheers Rich :8
