I know it seems pretty damn obvious to 99.99% of you but I struggle with this.
What paint / technique reasonably replicates machine guns, .50 cal barrels etc.
I find Gun Metal paint a bit silver or maybe I'm using the wrong one?
Please let the remaining 0.01% in on the secret....please?

Hi mate...............i just use good old Humbrol tinlet of Gun Metal, i leave to dry for about half hour and then buff it with an old worn out stiff paint brush.................i then use a small flat brush and dry brush some silver to bring out the detail, ya want the least amount of silver on the brush as poss............barely anything if need be...........make sure you only just skim the gun otherwise you can laydown to much silver and you`ll have to repaint!!............seems to work ok for me mucka, ya can always add a wash to tone the silver down to your liking fella.

yup, use Gunmetal as well, though it's the Vallejo one. It's a bit shiny indeed, but as Boots says, a bit of wash helps to tone it down ^^
Cheers

I use oily steely from Vallejo. I've also come across a spray on graphite lubricant that seems to buff up well enough -still have to try it on a kit yet though.

Hi Prof, this is just another way, to add to the other cool techniques here. I usually just paint the gun black, acrylic usually, then rub some AK Interactive Dark Steel pigment on with my finger. It's super fine and really sticks to the surface, virtually impossible to remove once it's rubbed in.
Cheers JT

Hi chaps, thank you very much for taking the time to reply.
Lots of options now, guess there's no substitute for trying them all so a quick shop online for a couple of bits and I'm good to go.
Thanks again guys.
