Hey fellas, during this year,I'd like to try and pick up the Dakota in 1/48.....I know in Vietnam they used a Gunship..'Puff,the Magic Dragon',and I have seen it somewhere...just not sure where!!!!If any one can point me in the right direction, with the kit and/or AM gear,I'd appreciate it.

CB,
Italeri's got a kit of the 'Spooky' C-47 as #1167 but it's in 1/72. I don't know of anyone that has it in 1/48 and available though. If you want to start with the plain C-47 in 1/48 you've got the older Revell/Monogram option of #85-5607 or the Revell Germany kits of C-47s from the Berlin Airlift (2 choices, #04518 or #04697). Can't help you in the AM/Conversion department though.

No worries CB! I just plugged in 'C-47' into the Hobby Intel kit search and that's what popped out.

CB, I'm going to amend my previous statement...there is a 1/48 kit out there from Revell/Monogram, #85-5615, the AC-47 Vietnam Gunship. Seems that I didn't pay enough attention to the first search that returned more results on the 2nd page!

There were generic DC-3's and there were some modded DC-3's that were a combo passenger/ cargo ship. (I could tell you a seriously funny story about that one!). There were generic C47's, EC47's, AC47's (in more than one form of gunship), and there was a C47 flare ship. Probably more as well. The term "Puff" was kind of a generic term used for the AC47, but not always considered proper. The ship out of DaNang was called "Spooky", and I've seen it repainted at least three times. The one DC-3 I flew in was painted blue over grey like an airliner might have been. We used to have Spooky come to call at least once a month at my base camp, and we were considered priority status for that mission out of DaNang. By the way the DC-3 is still the smoothest and quietest ride I've ever flown in. gary

Gary, thanks for the info, mate. The only reason I mentioned 'Puff',was the fact that I read a book years ago, about a gunship in Vietnam, that explained just how effective they could be,when used .Closest I've been to one,is the pilots seat in one being restored,up in Yorkshire ...If I can gather what I need for the build, any other info you can furnish would be great!

I used to see the one in DaNang about once every six weeks or so, but never really got all that close to it. And if I did, I didn't pay all that much attention to it. I use to use the south end of the runway a lot to hook up from when we moved out in mass.. I've seen it painted a charcoal grey color, sand and spinach, and kind of a two tone pattern that resembled that lizard green camo pattern.. Really didn't matter much as 80% of the time it flew at night. Last time we used it (while I was there) was to fire up the trails running parallel to the valley that would become LZ Mary Ann a year later. We did use it almost conatantly in Febuary and March 1969, but I was home drinking beer and chashing a girl named Jackie (they actually brought up two more planes from down south someplace). I'm surprised that nobody has ever came out with a conversion kit to build dedicated flare ship yet. The AC47 and a flareship often worked hand in hand. We had a C47 flareship and a C123 flareship orbiting us from time to time. WE NEED a good 1/72 scale C123 really really bad!!! gary
