FIRST UP BIG THANKS TO ANDY YOU SAVED THE DAY. Not knowing what a BMP is made from Andy stepped up and went on a recce to Bovington Tank museum. well the bulk is steel how ever trim vain and most of the engine bay plates and hatches are ........alloy They dont rust as is only the middle section of the side skirts.its not to late to adjust infact this may work well for me as my rust colour is still a little red oxide at the moment and i can do some green modulation.......wait and see?. Once again thanks Andy a true friend.

Mac you are more than welcome buddy.I think this will only add more dimensions to the paintwork you have already achieved. You can weather in a completely different way the sections in ally and it will make it all the more pleasing to the eye.

Looking back at Andys pictures Andy and i agree that the front and rear parts of the skirts are steel why.? i can only think for strength. Does any one have proof to confirm the pictures to me show rust and Andy said they are steel i had quiet a debait with a fellow modeller who insists they are all alloy.....................mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Dont want plunder number 2 i go with Andy on steel. . DSC07568 by macmcconnell, on Flickr. At the moment i am on broad weathering all the micro stuff is coming up,but i am more then pleased with the way this is going. . DSC07560 by macmcconnell, on Flickr. .Getting the colour line betwwen alloy and steel is key. . Mac

Awesome job, Mac. I'm glad to find out that my memory didn't serve me so bad as I was thinking, lots of parts of the BMP don't rust.

GARY thanks Luigi you were right in more ways.Because of the engine deck mistake Andy went on a fact finding missione he reported that even the side skirts were a mix which i had suspected. To make sure today the Operations Manager did a magnet check on the skirts and the rear section and front are indeed steel.

Thanks AG been fun and learning a lot on this one. As said after spys dispatched to find out the make up metals of the BMP it was time to go to work on the skirts. I gave them a quick coat of Halfords red oxide i then painted the middle sections an alloy colour and the ends in a rusty brown. . DSC07590 by macmcconnell, on Flickr. .Not the best paint job but it dont have to be. .Once this was done i sprayed on some clear varnish then some hairspray. I waited till this was all most dry and sprayed greens on top. This was a gamble as i wanted the paint to seperat and curl a little. Next i sponge dabed some greens on. Then with a small stubby brush hot water i removed some paint. . DSC07598 by macmcconnell, on Flickr. Here you can see some paint curl ,my research showed that unlike paint on steel paint on alloy lifts in large flakes. also note steel and alloy meeting for weathering. . DSC07597 by macmcconnell, on Flickr. .Above after i removed paint i dried the skirts and did some reaplication of the green with sponge. Now i know it looks a bit of a mess ,but bare with it i think your gonna like it. Rgs MAC

These next 2 pics show them just after pinwash and first few filters. . DSC07600 by macmcconnell, on Flickr. .picked out bullret hole with fresh alloy colour. . DSC07601 by macmcconnell, on Flickr. .I Forgot to mention i had added pistol ports notice the rust texture even on the smallest of parts. Also i shall now pick out the line between alloy and steel. These skirts are just resting in place may have the odd part missing..
