Hey Mack!
Punch and is a nice piece to use and the pin vice like you mention. Leather punches, but the hole sizes are specific. Then there would be the ever popular drill it with a drill bit a few sizes smaller than the hole you want, then use a needle file to bring it to the size you want. Usually a round needle file is tapered so you start smaller and go big. Larger whole, compasses with two sharp points work excellent...not so good on the small stuff.

Be careful unless money is no object for you. There are MANY set on the market and a wide difference in how they work, machine quality for price is the thing. I have the small Micro-Mark set and it works well and I went with a Chinese set for the larger sizes up to 5/8" and the make them larger. It is nice if your punch is designed to hold the part being ppunched in place but not necessarily worth the cost of that type of punch.

Some ideas: www.amazon.com/Precision-Brand-Punch-Die-Set/dp/B000LDG906
A serious tool source: www.contenti.com/
I would not recommend the hollow punches in any way.

Mack - I've never used a punch and die set in my life....they're simply ridiculous prices! For the price of a good Punch and Die set which will only do a limited range anyhoo you could buy the whole lot of these: My weapons of choice for holes: 0.1 - 2.5mm Micro Drills 2.5 - 4.5mm (0.5mm increments) Leather Punch (Excellent tool as yer can make stryene discs with it too and I do, ferkin' hundreds!) 5.0 - 12mm Hollow Punch set - Buy a good set (up to £20 will suffice) - ONLY use against soft wood end grain and they're fine General holes 10mm Plus: Olfa Compass Cutters (Use with blade reversed ) Ebay Up to £10 Engineers Dividers 150mm (As T says, they're like drawing compasses but have two points instead of one + pencil) £5 from hardware stores Hope That Helps OK All
As long as we are talking something I have long wanted to taste ever since Onslow was thinking he would fancy one what all goes on bacon butties that seem to make them a favorite??
Really what I am always looking for is a source for GOOD size 75 to 80 drill bits sold individually. I have bought some for Micro-Mark in the past but it has been a crap shoot. Sometimes they are decent and sometime Slaters .010 styrene is stiffer; also you have to buy a whole set of 60 to 80 to get them. It would be nice to find that spot that sells the high carbon bits instead of whatever that metal is that often come from who noes where.

WOW! That was bizarre... I cleaned it up for you so now its readable I hope. Great tip by Dicky... I have first two tool sets he mentioned. Now I have to look at getting third set for bigger holes. I use drills in every size there is and for holes or cleaning for part fit they are the best but I more and more find a need for a round from card stock to make an addition, knobs, dash boards or repair something and punch and die are the tools I found that do that job to perfection. I have from time to time looked at those leather punches that have the wheel and work like plyers but would want to see them up close before committing to a set. Today I used my small Miro-Mark punch to make a halt round to make handles for the gun in the Rolls 1920 turret which from the kit has little or no detail at all. I have a set of the hollow gasket punches but they never impressed me with neat styrene disks. For big disks 5/8" plus I use a draughtsmans hole template and mark the disk and then carefully gut it out, works sufficiently well for my work though for the higher level builder it might not meet the standard. Now that is some serious model supplies and there are shops everywhere, I hope thier supplies are up to snuff or they can get the products quickly so I can avoid some of the freight charges on the little parts. I wanted to order some MV lens from a New York outfit, for 8 lens the freight was going to be $9 US which told me I could do without those little guys.
Any way thanks for the link it will give me some places to start.
