Hi folks, pondering the meaning of life and all that, I began to wonder why people blog their builds/WIP etc? From my own perspective its about simply sharing my efforts and picking up pointers, advice etc., from those much more capable modellers -and yes if I'm honest- an occasisonal massaging of the ego So why do you? I started blogging my builds several years back because I wanted to keep a 'record' of what I was doing beyond just the 'hey I finished XYZ and here's the shots' type of posts. It also served to keep me motivated to progress with a build without it seeming onerous or like work. Then it evolved into being able to share with other builders and 'tell a story' of how the build came together warts and all. Now I will often revisit my own blog threads to see how I did something that I want to replicate or change/tweak on a current build, etc. There's also the 'community' aspect of blogging. The nature of the hobby is 'solitary' in many ways and posting a blog thread helps share that hobby/passion with other builders literally around the world. While my wife's extremely supportive and appreciative of the hobby, she's limited to the 'that looks nice' range of comments as opposed to the 'brothers in arms' that are fellow model builders.

Exactly what Bill said goes for me too Paul, down to the letter including the parts about the wife. You sure you ain't me Bill, or I may be you, scary Plus the added bonus of playing the photographer. I wouldn't get to use my camera so much if it wasn't for blogging therefore I wouldn't have been able to justify the price I paid for it. It gives me a nice excuse to buy stuff Could be twins separated at birth...blogging justified my first DSLR purchase and every one since then too!

I think the others have hit the nail on the head. I blog to share my passion for the hobby.

Lol, Bill that's just spooky I am adopted so you never know I don't get to go out too much due to my job so this really is the only place I share my modelling, if I couldn't share it then I doubt I'd even be doing it at all now. Well my parents 'say' I was born in Germany but all I have is a State Department document certifying my birth abroad...so you never know! Glad to hear the MSC provides you with the necessary motivation to turn out those lovely pieces you do!

Paul.....I have to say,for me,being part of this forum,is not about the blogging,or the WIP's,when they get posted,it is about the sheer friendship on site, and physically, when we get to meet at shows, that draws me to this particular Forum. My builds/starts/lifestyle changes are all here for people to see,but to me,it is not a lot different to chatting in the Pub,we just don't tend to get it done face to face!! I START loadsa kits, and finish very few ...BUT!.. IF I get the urge to break out the AB,I'll most probably kill mesel' with the fumes!!! Trying to paint so ferkin much,in one Looooong session!!!!

I started blogging builds in order to have some kind of discussion and exchange about the hobby. I have a lot of friends who think my modeling is "childish, playing with toys", etc, or that I'm wasting valuable time and money. I'm not going to discuss family....

Who are you talking to, Bill? Trying to be serious, as much as it's possible here in the pub, I mostly blog because I love being social. I don't think I'm good enough to teach anyone, but my mojo gets so many kicks in the arse by all the comments here, that I almost doubled my yearly production (ok, I work at a snail's pace).
