Greetings my new friends;
I'm a retired U.S. Navy Seabee and have been modeling now for about six years. Some things about me;
1. Even though retired from the Navy, I have a full-time job. I'm only 51 and way to young to be retired. No kids but still have limited time to build. About 4 to five hours a week.
2. I spent 21 years and six months serving all over the world.
3. I like building old kits and upgrading them with aftermarket items or scratch building.
4. I'm not good at the hobby but enjoy working with my hands.
5. I don't ever plan on entering a contest anytime soon. I build for me and for gifts to others.
6. I don't airbrush! I don't have the time to learn it at this time and not into mixing allot of paints. I KNOW......I KNOW.......! I'm a rattle can and brush guy.
7. Trying my hand at more scratch building and using card models as guides.
That is about it! By lurking on this site, I plan on learning as much as I can. I don't say much and wont post at all.
Thanks,
EO1 (SCW/AW) Retired. NMCB 62, 40, 5 SERE Master Training Specialist 89-95

When you say "I like building old kits and upgrading them with aftermarket items or scratch building." you didn't say what type of Kits you build.
Like you I have been building for 6 years or so and am a mediocre builder and used to "lurk" when it struck me that I was not contributing anything to the hobby. Mainly I was certain that there were many builders out there who are at the same level as I and were not posting their work because it was not in the Master Class. I then started posting my builds, the good, the bad and the ugly and have never read a word of criticism yet. Some of my builds are posted at the link below. modelerssocialclub.proboards.com/thread/4786/teabones-bone-yard-starts?page=1You will see that there is no Master Class work there. The fun thing about this web site is the feed back and encouragement you get from ALL the members who are just waiting see your builds, there are no rules here too speak of just post and mainly have fun and enjoy your building. Questions about style or technique will be gladly answered and you will be able to pick up a lot of good ideas.
Welcome and don't fear that someone will be less than your friend.

Bones;
Thank you for the warm welcome. I sorry I didn't go into a bit more detail about the kits I build. I build all kinds from ships, thanks, aircraft. I'm open to all era's. With aircraft I like working with 1/32 scale, 1/35 for armor and 1/700 for ships. I have a good stash right now and try to pick up cheap Revell kits, but do have other brands. For example, on the bench right now is a 1/32 FU4 Corsair. Its the old Revell kit and building it for a friend who just loves the aircraft and the history behind it. Working on upgrading the engine myself. My next build will be 1/48 MI-24 Hind from Revell. I don't have any after market parts for this due to the cost of them. I will totally be scratch building the cockpit myself.
Now I need to figure out how to post photos.

Hi Sammuel, welcome to the best, most relaxed modelling forum around, enjoy your stay!
Re point 1 on your thread, I would kill for that amount of free modelling time a week!
Re point 4, I'm nowhere near as good as most here but for the most part I still enjoy it and this is a nice place to be.
Re point 5, not a bad plan buddy, works for you.
Re point 6, not everybody does, you would be surprised how quickly the basics can be picked up though.
Please don't lurk mate, show us what you're up to, get involved, you'll love it.
All the best...

you will find that most here will say that they do not do high caliber work. your opinion of their work may alter when you see it though. i will say though this group is very encouraging and helpful with questions.

Hello Sam and welcome to MSC! Its a wonderful community and you will learn so much and i sure hope you dont just lurk.....get involved fella! We really have a great time here and there is many things we can learn from you as well. Ill tell ya, My deceased step father was a SeaBee in WWII and was stationed in the Aleutian islands early and when the war ended he was on Okinawa. My mother still has his Blue Jumpers and trousers w/cap and pathes. She had a killer pic of him in the Alaska before landing on the Aleutians, leaning over about 50 degree angle into a strong blizzard wind. We was a tough old fella. Cheers, Gary

Guys;
WOW......what a warm welcome. I don't think any group has reached out like you guys have. I'm a retired sailor...do you really think I could just lurk? Way to many sea stories and modeling to cover. Remember the Seabees are kinda what is left over of the last of the swashbuckling Navy.
I do have 1001 questions to ask, but I will make sure I put them in the proper groups. The other couple of groups I used to visit, really did not reply to my questions. They may have been to basic and I found them out myself by doing open source searching on the net. Some guys are pretty much set with competitions and airbrushing and that is great. I just build for me and as I said as gifts to like minded friends.
I get pretty good results with the rattle can and brush. I know it takes time with the masking and paint control. But all I have is time. I really would like to be pointed in the direction of a good article that has to do with painting models with a rattle can. It is, I'm sure a dying art. I did see some guys who painted some models with rattle can and brush and the results are amazing. They even went on to win some local and regional competitions. Now that is impressive. My all time goal is to really build a model from scratch. No after market parts, no PE, just real craftsmanship. The kind that when folks see it, all they could say is "OUTSTANDING"!
I'm a slow builder and like to take my time and work on problems.
I promise you guys, I wont be a lurker. Thank you again for the warm welcome aboard.
Sam

Welcome aboard Samual!! Seems I missed this one last night!! As you can see a friendly bunch here...albeit you may not want to be in a locked room with any of them ...LOL!!! Messing around...they ARE the best!! Looking forward to seeing some of your builds soon! I will keep an eye open for anything regarding the rattle cans and any SBS stuff. There are a couple gents here that paint with them and have amazing results...they may have some pointers for you! Any questions on anything...fire away!! Enjoy!!

Sam,thank you for the kind comment .I think the hardest part was keeping the camo part in scale .If you want to see more pics go to the Armor all scales board,Modern Armor,page 2 M109/A2.You can view the whole WIP.

Guys;
The ship models I posted are a couple of years old and I must say from looking at them now......I think my skills have improved. I will post a newer armor and aircraft kit next week when I get the photos taken. Thank you for the kind comments. I have been reading some of the other posts in the different folders. I'm learning more from this forum then any other I have been on.
Keep up the great work.

You post by using Photo Bucket below is a link on how, I found that you want to use the "Bulk Upload" feature on photo bucket to make the upload the easiest and keep your photos about 0.5MB anywhere below 1.0MB works best. modelerssocialclub.proboards.com/thread/5/uploading-photos-photobucket?page=1 If you have any problems with the uploads please let me know and Ill find you some help.
Also sometimes the site on uploads gets funny, if that happens I think DickyF or wbill76 can explain it best.
