A short time ago, I had the pleasure of attending the Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show in West Springfield, MA. This is an extremely large annual event held at the Big E Expositions Center in Western Massachusetts. This is strictly trains my friends. All sizes, shapes, vendors, private sellers, collectors, lions, tigers and bears…. Seriously though, this is a great show and if you have a chance to attend one, go for it!!
While I was there, I had the chance to check out Tichy Train Group’s Booth. More commonly know to scale modelers not of the train variety, are the Nuts, Bolts and Washers, or NBW’s for short. Tichy has a huge selection of other items like window and door frames, fire escapes, drums, boxes and more, not to mention a outstanding selection of railcars and other add-on pieces. So while I looked through the show selection and waited on a friend, I caved and bought a couple things. I purchased an H.O. Jib Crane, a set of H.O. 55 gallon drums and a railcar. In this review I will be showing the Jib Crane and the 55 gallon drums.
On to the review…
The Jib Crane Kit:
The Jib Crane kit contains one highly detailed spue.
Also in the kit is a section of brass chain and the single page directions.
The 55 Gallon Steel Drums Kit:
The kit contain two spue with enough parts to construct 12 drums. There is both, steel and wood fire lids for the drum included in this kit.
Comments:
These kits is reasonably priced and highly detailed for their size. Either would make for a fun afternoon of building not to mention a nice addition to any H.O. train enthusiast’s collection. All in all, a great little kits!!
Just had to build….
Ok, I needed to complete what I started here. I just had to build the crane, but what to do…
Then it came to me, a small vignette! So here we go!!
I started out with a small glass base.
I masked off the edges as to keep me from making to big of a mess. I then took some AK Dark Earth and mixed it with some plaster for consistency.
Next taking a small old sponge I added some texture to the applied mixture.
Now I could begin the construction of the crane…
After cleaning upn the main part of the Jib, I decided to add some weld beads…
Pretty much after the weld beads, the Crane just fell together…
I am thinking the most challenging part of the build was the brass chain. It seem a bit fiddly but with some patience it all comes together.
Moving along with the base, I made a small concrete section from sculpting clay. This is where the crane will be attached.
I needed to get some base paint down onto the crane. I shot a mixture of Tamiya Dark Brown, Hull Red and a touch of Orange.
While this dried, I went back to the base. I wanted to fill a dead space in the rear of the piece…what better than a section of track.
After the base coat had dried, jumping back and forth, I went ahead and stippled on some rust pigments and hit it with a quick clear coat. I applied some AK Worn Effect chipping fluid. This will work very similar to giving this the hair spray treatment.
Once this dried I applied a quick couple of sprays of a thinned out flat Orange and a flat Red.
This needed to to be chipped. This was easy and was achieved with warm water and a old stiff bristled brush.
I added some AK Engine Oil And Engine Grime to the base after I gave the entire piece a light wash with AK's Track Wash.
After adding a few Buffalo Grass tufts from Siflor I added some more Track Rust from AK.
Then I applied some Dark Streel to the top of the rails.
And this looks to be a wrap...for now!!!
Please join me for a continuation of this Vignette where I will be adding the 55 gallon drums and my twist on a wedgie - HERE
I would like to thank:
Donald B. Tichy for his fine creations
Terry for all her help at the show
