My latest project - Special Hobby's new large-scale Fiat G.50! The kit itself looks pretty solid - if basic. Not a lot of detail parts to fuss with! There's a slight gritty, sand-like texture to the bigger airframe parts. I'm assuming some passes with fine sandpaper will knock that away in no time. I'll be tackling this sucker OOB with the exception of some Airscale gauges for the instrument panel. Schemewise, I'm going with Ovia Touminen's FA-26. Tuominen was the most successful Finnish G.50 pilot with 23 kills in his Freccia and 44 total (he ultimately moved into a Bf 109G-2). He survived the war and became a taxi driver of all things. The scheme is kind of a mix of Italian and Finnish, with an Italian tricolor mottle base (tan, red brown and green) painted over with olive green, but still showing through. Add the yellow bands and it's a looker for sure. Another nifty element is the kill markings on the rudder, which were done with unusual front-on profiles of the aircraft shot down. The initial test fit is rather promising. There's some issue with the wingroots, but it looks like it's likely a matter of needing to clean up the lower wing fit. The cowl fit remains a bit of a question mark, too. The instructions call for building it around the engine, but I'd really rather not! Hopefully I'll be able to just slide it over the A.74, but the engine is resin with separate cylinders, so I need to tackle it before I can figure things out on the cowl side. Everything else is blissfully drama-free. More to come!

Started throwing paint at the A.74 last night. Under metallics (Alclad Steel and Semi-Matte Aluminum) some roughness in the casting becomes apparent. Not sure how to attack it without attacking details, too. Also, on very close inspection (closer than will be possible when the engine is installed in the cowl), thin layering seems to indicate 3D printing for the engine masters.

Can it be polished with compound?

Had a bit of a painting marathon last night...and after got a start assembling the A.74. The engine doesn't supply pushrods, so it's up to the builder to source those. The instructions call for 0.3mm x 8mm. 8mm seems a bit on the short side. My approach...drill the holes out in the engine block extra deep so I can insert the rods, apply some glue to the top, then pop them up into the cylinder heads. I'm using Albion Alloy silver nickel tubing, which is a bit $$$, but looks the part perfectly so I won't need to fuss with painting.

Can it be polished with compound? Don't think so...or I mean it could, but I don't know what good it would do and think you'd probably get into a situation with compound buildup in recessed areas.

Got all the forward pushrods installed. I think I'm going to skip all/most of the back run since it won't be visible and I'd prefer to not burn through my Albion tubing stock if I don't have to. Also verified that the cowl can slide right over the engine (barely), so the instructions', er, instructions to glue the cowl around the engine are basically just cruel and unthinking.

This G50 looks great, the added pushrods are perfectly visible and add a lot to the looks

Wiring and a start to weathering last night. The wiring of the A.74 is very unlike other radials I've built. Instead of a distributor ring, it's more of a distributor box that the ignition wires run to. So wiring up and over the cylinders up front, basically. If I were doing it over again, I'd remove the spark plugs, drill them out, and insert some lengths of .5mm tubing to serve the role and elevate the subsequent wiring. Oh well. First weathering step involved a wash with brown/gray artist oil. Next will be oil & grease stains, but I'll be waiting until I'm weathering up the interior cowl before tackling that step.
