Last year around this time, I needed to recharge from HK's big 1/32 B-25, so I decided to build two of Eduard's 1/144 MiG-21MFs on a lark. They turned out to be a blast, a nice break from the big stuff, and the tiny size (that's a business card they're sitting on) forced me to think on my feet when it came to masking and painting. This year, I've decided to turn this into a tradition - the 2nd Annual Eduard Mini-MiG Double Build if you will. This year's subject? The brand new 1/72 MiG-15. I don't really work in 1/72...ever...but even so, the MiG-15 is a seriously nice kit. Easily the best MiG-15 in any scale. This initial Czech Service release comes with two kits, the usual PE + mask, as well as some pylons, adapter racks and Czech-designed rockets for the late-model MiG-15bisSB options. There are also some crazy colorful schemes, but they're all demonstrators and air show queens, which I personally find lame. I'm currently planning on using these two schemes. The first is a MiG-15 from 1953, which shot down a USAF F-84 that crossed into Czech airspace that March: The second is a MiG-15bisSB equipped with wing pylons for tanks, bombs or rockets. This one dates to very late in the MiG-15s service career, from 1975-83. I'm hoping to give it a rather worn-out, tired look. I'm not sure what it anything I'm going to hang from it yet. Maybe the rockets, or maybe I'll splurge for the OFABs Eduard is releasing. So far I've only glued the forward and rear cockpit bulkheads in place and done a test-fit. Tomorrow will be lots of painting in the cockpit and intake.

Quick update. This is a sweet little kit, but there are a lot of fussy parts that need to get painted up before the real work can begin. Started with a primer coat of Gunze C2 Black Then last night I laid down some Alclad Aluminum, Alclad Magnesium (and Steel on the not-shown exhaust pipe), and Gunze C308 Gray for the cockpit and gear bay areas. Started placing some of the included PE, but it was getting late, so the balance will wait for another night.

For 1/72 these look pretty good!...I built the Airfix one when it came out,and it wasn't a bad kit! Bit soft on detail maybe, but the moulding and fit weren't bad! Bruce, you've turned the volume down....Sore throat???

Update! Cockpits are mostly done. PE applied, oil wash, some rust (MM Enamel Rust applied w/ airbrush needle), and a coat of Gaia Flat. Still have a little bit more to do - gloss the IP gauge faces, etc - but just about ready to close these up. The one on the right (the clean one) is 1950s vintage, so relatively new. The one of the left is a Czech MiG-15bisSB from the late 70s, so I'm going for a worn-and-weathered look. The rust is intentionally overdone considering how difficult it will be to see into the cockpit once the sidewalls are in place and the fuselage closed. It's tough to communicate how SMALL these cockpits are. Bigger than the 1/144 MiG-21 pits I did last year, but still, bulkhead to bulkhead they easily fit within a bottlecap.
