Since I am nearing the end of my Star Destroyer build I thought I would drag out another kit that I mae a start on and put away many years ago. Mainly because of the amount of work it was going to take.
For anyone not familiar with an anime by the name of Super Dimensional Fortress: (SDF:M), you may also know it as Robotech. I have been a massive fan of the shows mechanical designs since I first saw it as a young bloke. In fact discovering that Hasegawa had produced a new kit in 1/72 scale is what brought me back to modelling.
Anyway, in the show there is a series of bipedal machines used as walking tanks by the good guys. The biggest of these is the HWR-00-MKII "Monster" and a monster it is. It is like some unholy offspring of a Dora railway gun and ED209 from Robocop. Here is a coloured line art drawing with a human as a scale reference as well as some other reference images:
In 2008 Mike Salzo over at the Macross World Forums mastered a resin kit of this behemoth to match the other already available Destroids and I was silly enough to buy one. That said they are not very common, and I have only ever seen one other built example of the web.
Here are a couple of shots from 2008 or so when I got the kit in the mail:
The kit had a few areas that I thought could be improved upon so I quickly got the hacksaw out and went to town on the feet.
Before:
After:
And that is pretty much as far as I got until yesterday. So while I am still faffing around trying to decide what to do with the feet, I got stuck into assembling the arms:
As you can see there are some fairly gnarly seams to be filled to I broke out the automotive filler and went nuts. But while I was bonkers I decided to cut off the molded on exhaust detail on the back of the arm. So I now have to find some 30mm diameter thruster/verniers from somewhere, or refurbish the ones I cut off.:
So while I am mucking about adding detail, I thought I would enlist a couple of mates to make sure everything stays in scale. The size of the kit makes it easy to forget that I am working with 1/72 here. So please welcome Neville and Chuck, the apprentice Destroid mechanics:
In the background you can see the 1/2256 Revell Star Destroyer, which is no small kit. And that is not perspective messing with you, it SD is sitting right behind the Monster's torso.
While I had the main body out I removed the lumpy crooked hatch detail on top. I I also put Neville (with his trusty clipboard) to work surveying other areas that may need to be improved:
As you can see there is a lot of work to be done, and I already know I am going to struggle for motivation.
But I figure if I work in stages I should be alright. I'll just have to duck off to another build every now and then to stay sane.
Cheers,
Brett T
