NMF "shading" last night. I started out by spraying Gunze Super Stainless Steel and was surprised to see it drying lighter than the SF Silver. I guess the silver acts kinda like Alclad Airframe Aluminum then... Needing more tonal variation, I had to switchover to Alclad, and used Aluminum, White Aluminum, Dark Aluminum and Magnesium to contrast some different portions of the skin. It looks a bit contrasty now, but that's intentional, since the visual clutter of all the putty will knock down the contrast of the NMF.

Some painting on detail bits tonight. RLM 02 for the struts and internal gear doors and a bastard mix representing RLM 77 for the control surfaces.

Not glued down in any way, but here's a look at how the RLM 77 surfaces look with the bare metal wing.

What are you using to mask? Looks scary. I'd have a hard time putting whatever that is on a beautiful NMF like that!

Liquid frisket. Basically just liquid latex. It holds well enough for painting, but peels off very easily.

Finished up the 4+ day masking job tonight: And moved on to paint! For the gray putty I went with Tamiya Medium Sea Gray 2. The darker putty splotches up front look very much like RLM 81 in the color photos, so that's what I went with, using a mix of Tamiya XF-27, XF-22 and XF-10. I won't be able to remove all of the masking until tomorrow, but I went ahead and stripped one of the stabilizers to show the effect (FYI the stab putty lines were intentionally left broad...fuselage lines will be narrower for the most part).

Peculiar finish, why did it had putty in the seam lines? Stunning paintjob, as always

Peculiar finish, why did it had putty in the seam lines? Stunning paintjob, as always Aerodynamics and to cover up rushed workmanship, mainly. It was common practice to putty the panel joins, sand them smooth, apply primer and then apply paint. Late in the war, the primer was often skipped, thus the wacky finishes on some Me 262s. The one I'm doing, Wk.Nr 111712, was never painted. It's tail was (kind of), as well as the engine pods and rudder. The rest was left in this puttied state.

Very thin coat of RLM 82 on the tail. Also sprayed the engine pods black for a uniform base to work from.

Hi Doogs
Looking good
Forgive me for the naivity but I am assuming this process is only done with wingy builds but what is involved with ' micromesh and the Dremel polishing wheel' ?

Hi Doogs Looking good Forgive me for the naivity but I am assuming this process is only done with wingy builds but what is involved with ' micromesh and the Dremel polishing wheel' ? Los Sure. Basically it's all about surface prep for the bare metal finish. NMF really likes a nice, smooth surface. Micromesh gets a good deal of the way there, and the Dremel cloth polishing wheel goes the extra mile to create a glass-smooth finish. Literally, you can see your reflection in the paint when you're done with it.

Insignias masked and painted tonight. Well, most of them. The underside crosses are black/white so they're going to be a two-stage affair. But the black for them was laid down tonight as well.
