Got the underside crosses done last night. Beyond that, lots of random preps for weathering.

I can't wait to see how this weathers up. This is edge of the seat stuff right here.

Another cracking build Doogs! And something very different to the norm as well, which is always an eye catcher. Looking forward to the next installment..... Cheers, Sam

Alright, time for the fun stuff. Weathering! The pictures of 712 don't exactly provide a lot to go on, so my weathering is going to be largely conjecture based on time and place. 712 was found at Innsbruck around the end of the war. Call it May or early June. It's clearly been left outside and presumably not well tended, at least after it's gear collapsed or was collapsed. The time period it would have been sitting outside, say March through June, would see lots of flowering and presumably not-infrequent rain. Add proximity to the airfield and you probably have more local disturbances kicking up even more dust, etc. Ultimately, what I'm going for is broadly analogous to a car that's been sitting in a field for two months. No rust streaks or exhaust stains, but definitely in need of a carwash. I experimented with a few things to hit this look. My favorite was AK Interactive's Dust Effects, super-heavily thinned with Mona Lisa Odorless. Not the best photography, but here's the effect on my Scrap Eagle. And here's the effect on the 262. I made sure to do a lot of stippling, and even dabbing sections with that tight, black "Aires" packing foam. On black, for kicks And...on what will be the base.

There's light at the end of the tunnel now! Sprayed the final clear coat last night - a mix of Gunze Flat and Gunze Semi-Gloss - and unmasked the canopy. Next I need to apply a bit more AK Dust Effects and do a second pass with Flory Dark Dirt wash on certain areas where it basically bounced off the NMF (rivet lines along the aft fuselage, etc). Then it's on to the landing gear, attaching the control surfaces, rigging up the aerial wire and other finishing touches.

OK! After looking at this build for about a half dozen times, and just get alittle more stunned with it each time I see it. You did it right!
I'm calling this ME262 the standard at which I'll judge the others to come. Great job sir! gary

Another night, a bit more progress. Last night was chiefly concerned with a second sludge wash to the rear fuselage and the engine pods. One thing I like about sludging over a semi-flat coat is that you get some interesting staining. One thing I hate is LINT FOR MILES. I'm also reaching the point where I can start contemplating attaching the landing gear. I'm going to have to weed the grass mat where the 262 sits, but here it is in situ.

Still plowing. Last night it was stupid cold (for Texas) so I wasn't able to move as quickly as I'd have liked. Primarily concerned myself with dusting the canopy, weeding the grass mat, and getting a bit further along with the gear struts. The canopy was misted with highly thinned AK Dust Effects. First time I've ever gone for a not-clean canopy, but it suits the subject I think. Also weeded the grass mat to get a more realistic lie, since I'm pretty sure real grass can't hold up the wing of an Me 262. Got to do a full control surface test-fit. Apart from a bit of superglue whisking away the RLM 77 on a tiny spot on the starboard aileron, everything went peachy. One week out from ModelFiesta. I'm thinking I can probably make it.

I dunno. Modelfeista is weird. Last year (and it looks like this year, too) they just lumped all 1/32 into a single category. A single, very crowded category. And then there were some strange choices as to what won and what didn't win. I'm still floored that this Phantom didn't even place. Or this F-84.

WEEKEND UPDATE Friday night sucked. The cold weather played havoc with my CA glues and literally NOTHING would stick. Saturday I sourced some new CA and got back to work. Saturday was all about getting the gear mounted...so flat-coating and weathering the tires, routing the brake lines, mounting the gear doors. I also did some streaking on the tail and engine pods. I've never had good luck with AK's streaking products before, but hit on a technique that I think works pretty well. Basically, taking one of my Aqualon Wisp brushes, very lightly streaking the AK on, then going back and streaking it with the brush damped in white spirit. Last night, I installed the nose gear door - streaked with the same AK (winter streaking grime) to add some interest beyond just RLM 76. Also got the wingtip lights drilled, painted and mounted, the FUG 32 painted and installed, inner flap doors installed, and then I dealt with the aerial. Trumpeter makes no provisions for running the aerial wire. At all. So I made my own. I ran the aerial with EZ Line. Then I added some strategically placed bird droppings by placing a #10 xacto blade in some Vallejo Offwhite and then rocking it against the surface. If all goes well, I should be wrapping up the last details tonight! Finally!
