Hi buddy , I use the closest one to hand .... maybe some other brands have better qualities but I dont have a preference . Tbh I think they all behave in the same way however I do buy the smallest can going, so it slips into a drawer and out the way easily lol

Hiya Brother Gary, I used the cheapest I could find on my FW190 wreck and, IMHO, it worked well. I found was best to seal your base colours with a good varnish, then when fully dry use the HS before your acrylic paint. Leave the acrylic to dry for a while or minutes, depending on how much chipping you want to do. good luck !

How thick or thin should it be? Gonna practice on my test M3 Lee before i do the SU.

Remember my Tiggy and its weary winter camo? Used very good hairspray... I think I stole my wife's because I knew hers was not that cheap. LOLOLOL I sprayed two coats. Then allowed it to dry for more than half hour. Then I sprayed Tamiya white paint thinned with its own thinner. I read often that Tamiya paint was great for hairspray technique and I have to say YES! I think I allowed white paint to dry overnight because time ran out at my end. Then I removed the paint the following night with toothbrushes and toothpick. I use two different toothbrushes... regular soft brittle and one was cut in half making it more stiffer which works great to break up the paint. I would damp the brushes with water... use q-tip damped with water on the paint if necessary and allow it to soak abit because it will not come off right away. It was so easy to go overboard so I did little at a time then take a break. Look at it again and see where more chipping can be done. It was fun! Be sure to wear your kiltutu... special power may play an important factor at your end.

Some people do decant but I try to keep that stuff out of my AB

Gary, I remember now! I used my wife hairspray on my StuG III. Not sure if you have seen it before. Then I got AK chipping at the show and used it on Tiger. It worked great. I prefer AK because I can easily pour into my AB and spray it with better control. Here's pics of my StuG in case you forget because I recall you are as old as our mate Dicky... Hope it helps...

I always use RAVE 4X Mega, because it holds my hairs in place ( Both of them!) and because that's what the woman buys Honestly, it comes in a hand pump and easy to dispense in the airbrush.

LOL Thats two more than i got on my head. So, it comes in a plastic hand pump bottle too. I practiced spraying on some cardboard to get a feel on how it atomized and the like and it comes out in what seems like overly large droplet. I could use something to use in the AB.

On my one and only attempt at the hairspray method I used TRESemme Tres two ultra fine mist right out of the can. This is the results on an old cheepo Tamiya T34 A couple of good coats of HS, wait about an hour (a hairdryer would cut down on the time) then a nice coat of Tamiya flat white. I let the paint dry about as long as it took me to do a basic clean on the airbrush then use water and a somewhat stiff brush to remove areas. If your like me you'll hate it at first but after a few filters and weathering it'll come around.

Hi Gary I have used hairspray in the past with mixed results but also very good results however I have now switched to the AK chipping fluid as I find it much easier to work with and as Andy says it goes straight in the airbrush. Best bet is have a practice on a scrap model or similar before committing

The AK stuff doe's work really well, and it has the added advantage of your model not smelling like a beauty salon.
as far as hairspray,I'm not too far behind you.

I've never used hairspray, the only worn whitewash I've done was done with the white wash paint from True Earth. I've read, and also lots of friends told me the same, that I'd better use cheap one because the stuff they add to the expensive ones can react with the paints and, sometimes, can make it more resistant to water. After all women don't want to lose all the work they did because of humidity

Hey there...again Gary! I might have gone a bit overboard withe typing and pics but what the hey....sitting waiting to head out to the airport... Pretty much any hairspray will work...cheaper is better, for all those reasons that you would expect; less cash!!
When I meant I use whatever is closest this was literal. I have a few things on the bench: - Cheap fruity smelling hairspray I stole from one of the three females in the house...I just pour into an old Tamiya jar. - One White Rain (cheapest brand sold at Wally World ($1) in pump form. - One White Rain in aerosol ($1) - AK Interactive Chipping Fluid - Vallejo Chipping Medium - K4 "Paint Of" (odd spelling from the translation...should be Off)Each one of these works pretty much the same WHich the exception of the K4 but this is explained further down the page...they all allow the removal of paint from a surface to expose the paint beneath. It is how well they work individually and what kind of mood I might be in at that time. If you have a clear coat surface over your painting, which you usually do (future, Satin or even a Matte finish) then removing the paint can be done without the use of hairspray or any other medium. The clear coat does all the work for the most part. The medium used only make this process a heck of a lot easier. With or without the use of salt in the technique should give you the same result. The salt can give you a specific chipped look as seen from something hammered with sand or wear but can be used to semi-protect and area from over spray while giving you a natural worn edge. I know this is not a white wash, but the concept is similar. Here is an example of removal without any hairspray: Being a water based product it can be removed easily. This is True Earth as an example, it is just a real thin water based pant. Now you can get into Mapping. This is adding and the subsequent removal of paint with slightly different shadings to add maximum depth to the piece. This link go to Ken Abram's Camo Corner Blog: armorfarm.blogspot.com/2011/10/darius-minatures-part-two.html Ken show a perfect example of mapping a white wash on a Darius Piece. From my personal experience only, AK's and Vallejos Chipping products work outstanding! Like above on "Luigi's Fault" ...Spay it on, let dry, spray you paint remove with warm water (preferably distilled...if none, boil some water and let cool...removes all the junk - even in good tap water). With hairspray, you have a bit more of a "forgiving nature" when removing the paint. Straight water removed the paint but you can scrub and rub with various brushes and Q-tips, toothpicks, etc. With the chipping fluids, you need to dial back the force used. I love the hairspray technique because I can work an area a little harder with out removing a large area of paint with a light pass of the brush. With hairspray you can let thing site a day or two if you are busy of tired of working on something and come back to it. The paint is more cured and will be harder to remove. You can add varying amounts of alcohol to some water to aid in removal of the semi-cured paint. This where the K4 comes into play whereas this is similar to the mixture of alcohol and water but will work more like if the solution is almost full strength. Actually this is designed for canopies in wingy building to remove over spray. Be careful with this process as it can eat through to the underlying layers of paint if you have a thin clear coat. This is a process that needs some tact when working and there should be some practice prior....Play around with it. In the end, you, control how much to leave or remove and you control the variation in the coloring the whitewash layer(s). As long as you have that protective layer go to town and have some fun!!!

Best bet is have a practice on a scrap model or similar before committing Hey Pete and tha fellas. I have an old M3 Lee that i do all my testing on. I did a test area with the 4X Mega Rave. Its first ingredient is water, however it sprays thick and in droplets rather than fine mist. I sprayed Tamiya White over it and waited for 6-8 minutes and went to work. It kinda worked but was difficult to remove and i spayed a thin coat of white....not a success IMO. Next i snuk into my sisters bathroom late last night and grabbed her expensive hair spray, its called Lamaur Vita/e. I tried that next and what a difference. It sprayed beautifully out of the can and i used the same time frame and chipping method and it worked like a charm. Its first ingredient is Alcohol. OK, now im confused. What is the difference other than the main ingredient? It looks so far that the "Good Stuff" is far better than the cheap....in this case any how.

Water being the first ingredient will make somewhat of the difference where as it will dilute the sticky composite of the hairspray.
I have not had hairspray come out in droplets before, you can try turning up the pressure a bit and see if that helps some.
If you check the ingredients of some of the cheap-o stuff and grab a pump with a higher alcohol content and grab it, it should work fine through the AB in the same manner as the aerosol spray.
