I picked up the kit today at the local hobby pusher. love the old school tammy kits.
question tho, the paint scheme calls for XF-5 green and XF-61 dark green. are these the right colours?and does anyone know of the Valejo matches to them?
cheers Dylan

Hello Dylan, Sounds about right for the camo scheme for the two tone Grenn, but then again, I am not to up on the Chiefton... Some variation of this is what I think you might be shooting for: A quick and dirty guide for the conversion from Tamiya to Vallejo is HERE This is and old bit on Armorama and gives the Model Color equivalent. You can either convert or just start out to compare paints on this site: The Ultimate Model Paint Conversion Chart When you open the conversion chart, there is a box at the bottom. Just click on the ones you need to convert or compare. Sometime it can be a bit strange where there is no conversion for the paint as in the case of the 'XF5' to Vallejo...because I never placed a "0" in front of the "5" of the XF5....but when I just clicked the Vallejo and typed in just the number 968 for the Vallejo Model Color, the results came back with the Model Air equivalent. Tamiya XF5 = Vallejo MC - 968 Flat Green or Vallejo MA - 93 Field Green Tamiya XF61= Vallejo MC - 979 German Camo. Dark Green or Vallejo MA - 19 Camo. Dark Green Have fun with the chart...it helps out big-time!!! Enjoy!!

Now THERE is a Tamiya kit that gets too frequently overlooked. Cool subject!

Hi Dylan, the kit you've just bought is in fact a MK3,not a Mk5 as it says on the box.The main exterior difference between the 2,is the NBC pack on the back of the turret. There are other differences, but they are dependent on what modifications were done, and when. The image Todd threw up is a Mk11,I think, but I won't swear to that, because they weren't around when I was serving.Colour wise,if they were in the UK,they were generally just the green. In BAOR,they were the two tone as you see on Todds image. If it was in Alberta,Canada,at BATUS,it would be like this.. and if was attached to the Berlin Brigade it would look something like this... You can find loads of images of these schemes if you Google! There are a couple of conversion kits on the market that I know of,but they're not always easy to get hold of.If I were you,I'd model it as a Mk3,and just detail it up a bit, with new grab handles, mantlet cover etc.. EDIT>>>>>>>>>Accurate Armour are showing that they're still doing one here... www.accurate-armour.com/ShowProduct.cfm?manufacturer=0&category=66&subcategory=39&product=72

Todd, I totally forgot about the conversion chart. thanks Cee Bee, wow thats a lot of info. I am going to be building a BATUS tank. are the colours the same?
I am going to attempt the impossible with this old Tamiya kit....I am going to build it without any aftermarket at all.... a concept that could get me burned at the stake on some sites.
I am going to start on it tonite. maybe I'll have a few pics later

Dylan,if you use Light Stone, and Nato Green as your primary colours,by the time you've done your washes etc,she should tone down nicely.

great choice Dylan and nice concept too. You'll find here we don't care HOW you build your model so long as your having fun that's all that matters.
Cee bee's light stone and NATO green are spot on, he should know cos I bet he's crawled over, under and inside a few in his time. Tamiya do a very nice NATO green if you want a good match

well Batus it is then.
Ive got the lower hull bits glued on, and hopefully today I can get the upper hull all sorted out. everything fits ok so far but the mold seams are huge. I didnt bother to clean up most of the stuff that cant be seen on the suspension. the upper hull and turret are a different matter.
cheers Dylan

and now for an update. I managed to cut some pieces off the sprue and glue them to the hull. pretty happy that I still have all my fingers and all the bits seem to be where they are supposed to be.

Good progress Dylan, always a plus when your model-building session ends with all fingers still intact!

Are you going to apply any form of anti-slip surface. I have heard it described as 'concrete like' but I have not seen any good close ups of the surface application.

I use this textured Rustoleum rattlecan for no-slip walkways. Excuse the quality - this was only my second model back to the hobby. But the no-slip is very subtle, more a slight shift of texture than anything else.

Ha Ha you guys are funny. I barely have time to build it OOB let alone add detail to it. at the rate I build,I might get er ready for paint by June. I did have some grandiose plans to get the Char 2C and the chieftain painted this week, but I spent 2 of my 3 days off sick in bed.
if I feel energetic this afternoon I might start on the turret.

I am going to attempt the impossible with this old Tamiya kit....I am going to build it without any aftermarket at all.... a concept that could get me burned at the stake on some sites. That, to me, is the easiest way to actually get more kits out of the stash and onto the shelf...finished! I mean, nothing wrong with a big bucket of aftermarket, but 6 month builds don't add up in the display case very fast.
