I haven't felt like posting much lately, but I have been building. This is the venerable Academy M1A1 "Iraq 2003" kit. The grandkids gave it to me for Christmas so I dug right in. Past reviews poopoo'ed this one as being inaccurate, but I don't care. I used some Evergreen strip and rod as well as stretched sprue to construct the turret roof details. I took a set of indy links from a Orange Box Abrams, and took some Rustoleum textured paint for the no slip surfaces. I primed the model with a tan enamel then used MM Acryl "Sand". I scubbed some of the top coat away in high traffic areas then used some oils and enamels to accent the wear and tear. G

It is looking great!!! Hobby Town sells this kit and I was tempted to buy it but it was the reviews that held me back.
You have my attention as usual! Glad to see another M1 build here like Luigi stated...

Gee, G, lookin' good. You're right about the kit's accuracy issues, it would probably work better accuracy-wise if it were used as a basis to back-date it to an M1, but it still builds nicely. I've done a couple myself. Come to think of it, I've always had a hankering to build an M1 from "Team Yankee", and I think I still have one in the stash.....

Looks like you're having fun with it G, that's what counts! Nice progress on the Abrams. Not sure how many that makes in the last couple of months but there's been a definite 'surge' in Abrams builds of late, not that there's anything wrong with that of course.

Thanks all!
This and two more I'm working on are what I consider "practise" for my DML M1A1 and M1A2 builds to come.
I even ordered some AM parts for the USMC smoke grenade system. That ought to be fun!

We should have a year long "Abramsfest". Between the Army and Marine Corps there are so many variations on equipment it can be mind boggling. A tank from 2003 in the initial invasion of Iraq looks completely different from one in 2009. Same with the tanks in A'stan. Here's a few more shots. She has her tracks on now. After looking at hundreds of photos I realized that the tracks remained fairly dark in color showing almost no bright rust. Apparently constant movment kept the tracks burnished. Once parked however they showed quite a variety of color. G

Nice progress again indeed...I must admit I know jack about the Abrams (well a bit more now with me building one and all the other ones here) but I noticed indeed that there's a lot of variety. So can't have too many indeed...it's a bit like Tigers and Panthers Cheers

Thank you all. It's been a while but I have been at it. The weather took a turn here so I am concentrating on other things. Slow progress on the details. At least it's progress! Exhaust staining. Loaders MG ring Nice overall shot. G

Thank you all. As much as I like the Abrams I'm still glad I was infantry.
Andy no pigments were harmed in the making of the exhaust stain. That's all paint.
I first airbrushed Tamiya Neutral Gray, then a mix of NATO Black and Hull Red. I drybrushed some MM Enamel Jet Exhaust over the center afterwards.
