Nice one Marc, looking forward to it! Best piece of advice I can give you is approach it 'modularly' especially when it comes to the deck and superstructure components and think about how you will (or won't as the case may be) paint it and plan everything around that. Otherwise you can literally end up in a corner very fast. Have fun with it!

Thanks guys. Glad you are all looking forward to this. AND PILING ON THE PRESSURE Bill, that what is probably the most unnerving thing about this build. Planes and tanks I know what to build and when to paint it. No freakin' idea here. But I was looking as yours... nice spread in FSM BTW... and figuring on doing that sort of thing.

It's a Smart Kit? So does it have Indy links or DS tracks? I'll be watching yet another boat build again. Gotta get me one too! Jeff

I had a lot of fun doing it, the railings in particular are what will cause you the most head-scratching but definitely add to the build in the end.

Marc...Sub-assemblies! Like Bill mentioned somewhat. Hull, deck, superstructures. Each componant can be dealt with in sections making it easier to finish as you go. Personally I put the railing on as the last step of each assembly. This way you can paint them on the PE sheet, attach and touch up. Working any rigging, you will want to remeber working inside to out as to not have to go past, around or over something you already installed.
Relaxe and enjoy!!

Who knew there would be this much interest in a ship build Cool. Should make for a fun ride. Doog, full hull Jeff 1 and Jeff 2... Hey, is this a Dr. Seuss book?... All along I thought if you had a 1/350 scale ship model it would be huge. To me a ship was a ship. This apparently is a relatively small ship. The hull is just under 12". Go Know And Jeff 1, maybe hey used tank tracks as ballast Andy, They wat this year is going I think I need to look up the definition of comfort zone. I need to get back to that. Bill, "the railings in particular are what will cause you the most head-scratching"... Oh good. I can return the head lice shampoo. MF72, Shove a cooler of beer in an inner tube and tie it along side. T, exactly the advise I've gotten from the ship builders in my club. Hull & deck, super structure, gun mounts as subs and the railings and fiddly bits top to bottom & inside out. So lets crack a bottle of champagne across this thread and launch the WIP. I am officially building a ship. Yeah, I know it;s just 2 parts but that's how they all start. At least they are the 2 biggest.

Yeah, destroyers are pretty small in the scheme of things. The idea of all the PE railings and such on something these size of a large hot dog freaks me out.
One day I'll build my 1/144 USS Fletcher...

Jeez, just under 4 feet Let's see... using the formula (X/Y)x(A/B) where X= the beam, Y = the draft, A= the length at the water line and B= the caliber of the main guns.. we get... OOPS, almost forgot to carry the naught ... 8 TIGER TANKS. Side by side of course

Wing_Nut I hope you don't mind if I come along for the ride as I have the same kit sitting on the shelf waiting for me to get my act together. I initially brought it for the father in-law as it bears his surname but he unfortunately showed no interest in building it but I didn't mind as it is such a great kit which I look forward to building one day. He did however enjoy reading about the history of this highly decorated ship which earned a Presidential unit citation, sixteen bronze service stars and was assigned as escort to Admiral Nimitz’s flagship South Dakota in Japanese waters. As you can probably gather I've done a fair amount of research on this ship already and found ModelWarships.com to be a great source for reference material. You'll find some great builds of this kit there like the one Jeong Hoon, Lee did or Matt Enochs water line diorama. Ed McDonald has a really detailed build thread using this kit to build the USS Lansdowne DD-486 which is nearly identical and I think you'll find it a interesting read, he has also done the USS Buchanan DD-484 which is just an outstanding build. There are also numerous other builds of this kit going back through out the years on that site but I believe Ed McDonald's to be one of the best and more photo's of his U.S.S. Buchanan DD 484 can be found here. Anyway I hope you find some of those links as helpful as I did and if you need any help with reference material I'm sure it will be in one of the many links I have bookmarked for this build. Edit - Link to actual photos of the U.S.S. Buchanan which might come in handy and this one should be very helpful seems how you are using the Cyber Hobby Upgrade Set

Sabre, certainly do not mind 1 little bit. Welcome aboard. OH MY, how nautical of me In fact you have earned a window seat with the links to those other builds. Super looking builds. Really got those mojo juices going. A guy from my club is a mod there so i signed up earlier today and will be picking their brains there.

I'm sure they'll look after you over there Wing_Nut, I know the forum is very informative when in comes to this ship and you'll find a lot of information about the various upgrades of weapons, radar, etc., the ship went through while in service. I found this to be interesting read from the Diary of the Captain LCdr. Daniel E. Henry if you are interested in the history of the ship and also the Formal Surrender of Japan. There is also a couple of great reviews one by Steve Backer and Dragon Models has a review by Timothy Dike, the modeler who was instrumental in the kits production. I know you went with Cyber Hobby Photo Etch Set which has highly detail hand rails for your build Wing_Nut but for those of you who have yet to decide which aftermarket set to use, I have added a link for Gold Medal Model Photo Etch Set just in case there are those of you who would like to compare the kits. I think there's a place for both sets to be used if you have the money, the webbing on the hand rails of the Cyber Hobby set look great. There is also another kit on the market from Gold Medal Models 1/350 Benson/Gleaves Destroyers Photo-Etch Detail Set which is for all intentional purposes is the same kit as the U.S.S. Buchanan Set but the link does mention differences between Gleaves Class Ships and the Benson Class Ships so for that reason alone is worth the read.

Hey Boyd. Glad to see ya here. And back at ya. Sabre that set looks nice but I need to keep this sorta simple. Got the hull filled ans sanded and the deck installed. Started in on super structure subs and already sanded off detail around the seams at the corners. Added some super fine wire for the hand hold. The microscopic attachment points won't be there but I figured this would be better than he missing bit around the corner where the seam was sanded. Drilled out the port holes as well.
