I've been having a reoccurring problem every time I try to do any weather with artist oils.
I apply a topcoat of Future over the subject. I let that dry a couple of days and then when I go to do a wash or filters the mineral spirits (I'm assuming) causes the finish to haze or frost. It looks very much like what Micro Set does around decals sometimes. The only problem is...subsequent top coats don't eradicate it. I've had this happen now with Turpenoid, Wal-Mart mineral spirits, and high end art mineral spirits. I'm just assuming this is the Future reacting which is why I tend to try to avoid it.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I feel like I'm going to have to find some alternative to oils. I'm tired of almost ruining builds. Fortunately, I was able to save this current disaster.

Sorry, I'm of no help, I don't seal before using oils. I go directly on the matt paint.

Plastic Mr. Surfacer Gunze lacquer Alclad Lacquer gloss Decals Future
I've had this happen with Acrylic paints (Tamiya) as well as with Future instead of the Alclad gloss.

What oils are you using?

It's a set I got at Hobby Lobby. They are Thomas Kinkade. I've also considered that these may be the issue. I imagine they aren't the highest quality. I got them a while back in a pack after my Windsor stuff went south. They seem to be very oily.

Hey there Jimmy, this is the second time in about a week or so that I hear the connection of future and Alclad specifically. I have not had an issue as of yet myself; however, I am curious if the combination of newer Future formulations and/or any possible difference in Alclad formulation (not that I heard of any).
One suggestion may to pic up some of Alclad Aqua Clear. It does not seem impossible that there is a bad interaction between the two products on you list.

That's possible but I've also had it happen sans the Alclad when I've used future in that step. I have to imagine there is some common denominator. I had this happen two years ago on an armor build and there was no Alclad in the equation. Then it didn't happen for a couple of builds and now it's happend again. I just don't get it.

Well, I am thinking the Future may be the culprit at the moment. I bought a large bottle almost 3 years ago and have never had an issue with or without the use of Alclad. I do know that they have recently changed the private labeling again which means it may be a good possibility of the formulation change.
I will do some digging as I assume some others and yourself will undoubtedly to as well. If something turns up, I will let you know!
For now I would think there are many clear coats that will work as substitute for what you are trying to do…Testors dull and gloss, rattle can auto clear coats and matte finishes, Vallejo, AMMO and more that may fit the bill until a suitable acrylic clear is found.
Good luck.
