AMMO of Mig Jimenez S.L. of Spain is a commercial vendor of quality Paints and Weathering Effects products as well as publications geared to the modelling community. Even though AMMO of Mig Jimenez is fairly new to the scene, many of the talented individuals that design, create and sell these modelling products have been in the game for a long time and continue to bring the best they can offer to the modeler today.
Waffen SS Colors: Camouflage Profile Guide is just one of the few publications that AMMO has offered recently. This is an eighty page book printed on A4 high quality paper filled with full color renditions by Claudio Fernandez on the subject of coloring and camouflages of Germany’s Waffen SS before and during the Second World War.
The book is broken up into eighteen sections covering a wide selection of vehicles from several units within the Waffen SS:

Schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 102
Other Units/Unknown Units
Black and white/color comparison – models
Waffen SS Colors: Camouflage Profile Guide starts off with a short Introduction to the book whereas the authors explain a little behind the creation of the book. The book is the interpretation of information seen in old black and white photographs, combined with documented painting guidelines of the time to give a very comprehensive look at the painting and camouflaging schemes of the Waffen SS during WWII.
This book covers some of the design schemes spread out of fifteen individual units of the SS and one Unidentified Unit. The authors do not claim to have the be all end all answers to the age old question as to what colors we might be looking at in old black and white picture but rather a logical deduction from researching and cross referencing documents and archival photographs to make the best assumption of what we might be looking at in respects to coloring of the vehicles and camouflage schemes.
In the second section entitled Technical Information, we are shown several color pallets created from the RAL Catalogs and Oberkommando des Heers ordinance (H.M.). Each pallet is a collection of German paint schemes varying in shades and covering the base colors and added covering camouflage colors. Each set of colors also defines the dates in which they were used.
Moving through the bulk of pages that make up this book, each set of color renditions is broken down by units as I defined above within this review. Many of these renditions show multiple angles of the same vehicle while others bring out key points of interest such as unit markings and placement. There are over 180 color pictures showing the different colors used one the Waffen SS vehicles. Each of the picture is supported by informative text explaining the vehilcle, unit and RAL colors used in the color scheme depicted.
The epilog of the book shows us a nice color to black and white comparison through the use of two finely made models by Pere Valls. This is an excellent evaluation to show not always what we see in black and white photograph can easily be interpreted and more often than not, colors are misinterpreted.
Conclusion
I feel that Waffen SS Colors: Camouflage Profile Guide from AMMO by Mig Jimenez is an exceptionally comprehensive collection of colors and camouflage schemes used by the German Waffen SS units in WWII. Even if the reader may not completely agree with the author’s assessment of the coloring used to define these units, the book is sure to inspire many a modeler to discover and create painting and camouflage schemes of their own. The information is presented very well as it is a laid out pictorial of coloring within the SS Units. Albeit there a tremendous amount of color and camouflage schemes within this book the supporting text of the book is limited to short excerpts defining the individual pictures themselves. So if you looking to learn more about the Waffen SS operational history you will obviously need to find it elsewhere; however, if you are looking for one of the best collection of operational coloring and camouflage scheme I feel you will be hard pressed to find another. I highly recommend AMMO’s Waffen SS Colors: Camouflage Profile Guide to any modeler of German vehicles as a complete reference guide to schemes as well as to anyone interested in Color schemes of WWII German Armor.
Highly Recommended!
