Yes, I remember my very first model...it was a 1/700 USS Arizona kit that was for sale at Woolworth's (when they still existed!) for something like $1.50 or $2 maybe, can't remember. Anyhow, on a monthly allowance of $5 in 1984 that was a major purchase but still left room to get a tube of glue and a couple of small bottles of Testors enamel paint, so it was perfect! I built quite a lot as a kid, mostly aircraft, then hung it up when I went to college and only came back to it later on as an adult.

Ooo, mine was a Airfix 1/72 Cessna 0-2 Skymaster.
We should really do a GB where we all build our first kit again!

Airfix 1/72 Spitfire and Stuka in plastic bags from Woolworths, either late 1950's or very early 1960's. The first issue had the pilot figure moulded onto the fuselage halves so when it was assembled he had a big seam round the head.
Then onto AMT cars, a very expensive modelling option for a 13 year old in 1960's UK as we were all poor. I think one kit was about three weeks pocket money.
Very limited choice, high cost, no money and plasticard soon made a scratch builder out of me. Oh yes, the only cement was in a tube and filler was Plastic Wood from the DIY shop - stunk like crazy and took forever to dry, then it usually fell off when you tried to sand it!

My first kit was an ocean liner that my grandmother sent me. She also included in the box, tube glue and those little glass testors paints. This was Christmas 1958 and Canada Post shattered many parts inside the box in transit. One of my uncles rescued the mess by repairing the the kit parts so I could build the worst glue bomb ever. My favorite part of the the build was pasting all the little paper flags that went from stem to stern on a piece of black thread. You had to ask...............
