Brought across from MHI forums. No new update yet.....
Well folks, I can ignore the call no longer, I need to build another 1/48 jet!!
I decided to 'ave a crack at this little beauty with some lurvely TwoBobs decals. Will be doing the one at the top with the lovely big rising (setting?) sun on the tail.....
What an absolute pearler of a kit it is too! And with a relatively low parts count it should build up pretty quick. So, on with the show. First up was some cockpitty type stuff. All raised detail here so will look smashing under a lick of paint. Side consoles are separate, which helps with the painting and finishing. Have had a look online and the instrument panel layout is pretty accurate too which is always a winner.
Next, some fuselage bits. Here we are gluing the gun bay panels in place. Weirdly enough, you don't get the gun bay to go behind it..... :problem:
Next up, the rear fuselage and wings. This all went together very quickly and the fit is absolutely perfect. Believe it or not, there are 11 parts in this lot!! No trace or need of filler! Soup-herb!!
To show you what I mean, here is the vertical stabilizer simply clicked into place. No glue!! Being a nice tight fit, it means I can paint and finish the model and tail separately and click it into place at the end. Considering I am doing the one with the big rising sun on the tail, this is awesome! No masking! Huzzah!!
A similar notion with the horizontal stabs. These actually are joined by the shaft and are meant to be sandwiched (mmmmm, saaaandwiiiich....) between upper and lower sections. This makes it problematic for painting as the camo tailplanes overlap on bare metal rear end. More pesky masking!! I elected to split them in two so I can install them later. As you can see, once again the fit is exceptional!
Here we are with the trailing edge surfaces installed. The centre section is slightly drooped, as is the case with most parked F-5's I have seen. Once again, two thumbs up for fit...
While researching my build online (I really need to stop doing that) I discovered that the version I have in the kit is not correct. I need a different nose cone (shark nose) and a different LERX (Leading Edge Root eXtension) among other things. As luck would have it, I already had a little something on the way in the mail. This arrived on my doorstep yesterday....
Inside were two of these....
They are essentially a reboxing of the (slightly different version) AFV kit under Academy. Plastic in the box is AFV all the way. Upon opening the box I realised that this kit had all the bits I needed. Huzzah!!
You can see below the two different sprues between the two boxings. Those of you who know the F-5 will see what I mean. The LERX's are especially obvious.
So that is where I am at as of this evening! Hopefully there will be more build updates soon....
Cheers,
Sam
