Hello Folks,
In an effort to salvage some of the content from MHISC, I will bring over the individual remaining entrants for the Wingy Challenge and their builds to MSC in case they wish to continue to participate in the contest.
If you are one of the contestants and you wish to revive you build and have this content under you own name as the Thread Originator, simple follow the same instruction for moving posts from one forum to MSC outlined HERE and you can start a new thread and easily copy and past the information into the new thread. Any questions, please do not hesitate to PM me and I can help you through the process.
It's official - I've lost the plot.......Nemo is takin' to the skies!
For
the record, for this build, I blame Ceebee for parading a constant
stream of brilliantly built helo kits past my greedy peepers,
Zvezda/Revell, the raffle organisers at Lansing Show and Lady
Luck........
For the 'AIR' section of the GB elements I shall be
tackling Revell's re-boxing of Zvezda's Mi24V Gunship - One of the most
iconic helos currently in service. Many sites report this as being the
best Hind kit available in ANY scale......just remains to be seen if I
can do it justice.....Gulp!!!!
Not
havin' ANY experience in this kinda thing I gave the sprues the once
over....they look like helo bits so that's good! Seriously, this kit has
an absolute shedload of detail including both complete engines and
gearbox and all access panels are poseable open or closed as is the
cockpit. Talkin' of which, the 'office' is the only potential weak point
with all instruments recreated in decal form on flat surfaces...not
ideal but perfectly acceptable if you go for the closed cockpit and add
the kits' chaps - Oleg and Dimitri Because I'm a glutton for punishment I've plumped for Eduard's Self Adhesive Zoom Interior printed etch update set.......
Main
rotors are moulded with the correct sag and the rear tail is modelled
with the correct 3 degree offset for tail rotor torque balance -
apparently!
Here be sprue shots........
Lookin' thru bits....
Cool stickers!
Some super fine mouldings here, no flash and a few considerately placed sink marks.........
Textured roof lining.....
'Busy' instructions....
....and because I've seen proper wingyists do it, I taped the fuselage together to check the fit.......
What join?
That offset tail....
Bear with me.......there will be lots of questions I dare say!
ACW even the incredulous ones.........what AM I doin?
Okay this build is offically Unpaused with the DSB sorted so I set to........
Whilst
there's plenty of scope for detailing this kit even further I will be
building this one as Messrs Zvezda and Revell intended apart from the
Eduard etch........
I diverted from the instructions immediately
and went with what I (probably unwisely) decided will be the best way to
achieve ease of pre-painting and etching:
Twin Tupolevs included separate compressore and turbine ends and drive shafts.....
Gearbox:
The
main bulkhead shows the fuselage offset including the angled decks the
Hind has to oppose the torque twist from the tail rotor.....
Partially assembled and upper engine platform dry-fitted...
Engines and gearbox dry-fitted:
Main undercarriage well...
Up front I added the up and down and left and righty bits
Primed some bits.....
Some reference material.....
Tomorrow we'll add some colour.............
Managed to get some painting done last nite and finished off today and
added the etch bits - not all but the bits I wanted to use...........
Painted OOB engines....Aluminium, Flat Black, Red Oxide, Flat Lt Grey, Light Brown - all LC and some Blood Red from GW.....
Some
IP action......double layered, self adhesive etch and I managed to
assemble the teeny weeny Weapons Officers Sight too.....happy days!
Etch seat covers as well as belts - great little Zoom set .
Engine 'deck' with stains in AK Engine Oil:
Engine deck fitted out.....
Engine deck fitted....
Hopefully fuselage assembly tomoz
Okay today's update:
Fuselage fitted....some filler but that was
purely and simply my fault....some paint on the outside edges of the
interior was just enough to hold them apart in the two spots you can see
on top.....no biggies, all the important parts mated up no probs so I
should have little trouble with glazing and panels. Word to the wise,
before mating to the hull make sure all edges are paint free!
Exhaust nozzles and Gina Lollybridgelayer air intakes assembled....to be painted separately.....
Undercarriage panel bay fitted - ready for clean up before yer ask
I
managed to lose a piece which I replaced with some styrene.......no
idea where it's gone....I cleaned it up and then Poof!!! Gone! I even
checked my eyebrows!
Sanded to shape and discs added...
Under chin sight and gun mount.....
Stub wings got their sponsons and outers fitted and then these were added to the fuselage along with some more 'bits'
Okay spent an hour adding a few more fiddly bits and prepping the last
minute additions ready for primer - these will get painted and added
during final assembly:
Back end complete......
External additions - open hatches with rams added:
Ordnance....some whooshy boom things, some multiple whooshy bang things and some dacka dackas......
Chin turret and chain gun fitted....
Finally
added the blades to the rotor head, these are very fine mouldings with
some nice sag moulded in....tomorrow the head will be completed with the
actuator arms....
Not much to show today but we're on the home stretch now.......
ay BIG progress today.......gotta lurve days orfe!
The assembled
and primed main rotor recieved it's aluminium leading edges which were
masked off.....top was sprayed Satin Black and underside Dk Green
Ordnance was base coloured.....
Main rotor assembly internal braces added and painted up along with opening returns...
I
added flats to the painted mainlanding gear wheels - it would appear
the Russian and Czech air forces don't have foot pumps.....
Painted
up all the hatches that will be modelled open and added some dry decal
placards to the internal faces which the kit doesn't include:
I closed up the main door on the left side - here's the view in the crew compartment....
I then painted up the glazing frames.....I will do the inside of the open sections when these are 'gone orfe':
Sprayed up rotors with masking tape removed and blade tips picked out in GW Iyanden Darksun
Then
it was a case of brush painting the fuselage......having checked my
refs I decided to go with a two tone brown camo Russian scheme as
opposed to the pimped up box art Czech version....
Gotta luve Lifecolour
Camo next and a nice Flat Coat
After a morning at the beach and an afternoon havin' my thong surgically removed in Accident and Emergency I progressed the Hind with the camo patches......
Added the wheels, so she's standin' on here own..............errrrrr.....three feet!
Made a start on the decals with the ordnance.......
Despite
liberal coats of Sol whilst fittin' and Set after, I can't eliminate
the silvering.....I've soaked them again to see if they settle again
over night and then I'll try Flatcoat......
Havin' checked the
refs for the model I was attempting to recreate I realised that not all
the dec placements in the instructions match up with the ref
pics.....I've gone with the real thing and am attempting to recreate
what I can see in the photos rather than what Revell suggest....
Here's
the main ones in place, placards and warning signs will be added later
to best represent what I can see.....not worried about accuracy here as
long as it's as near as dammit!
Reckon
I'll have the final assembly and remaining decs on tomorrow so I can
Flat overnight before starting on washes 'n' weathering
Final assembly............
Attached the panels using dots of CA:
Had
one slight misalignment issue where the gapped fuselage resulted in the
fan uptake above the 'Gina's' fits sitting slightly to starboard.....
A
quick wash overall with AK's Track wash heavily thinned and some engine
grime around the panels and the whole thing was pretty much done and
dusted...........
As
ever thanks for the great support in my first foray to get
airborne...bit of a steep climb doin' it in Braille but hey ho!!! An
enjoyable build and a fantastic kit!
See yer around
Completed Build!
