Alllllright. Time for Dupes to break out of his funk! I've been sidelined for a month with a cold, sinus infection, pneumonia, and a messed up back (from coughing too hard from the pneumonia). Haven't been in my basement, at my bench, or on my bike since the 1st of August. NOT GOOD! Had the fellas from my IPMS chapter over last night to build, decided I was going to crank something out to get me rolling (yes, I probably should have tackled one of the many WIPs and shelf queens I've got going, but this is more fun (and motivating)). This is the 1/72 Hasegawa F-20 Tigershark kit circa the early 80's. I've got several of these to do in various paint schemes...it's a great little kit that can be found for $5-$10 a pop. There were actually only two F-20s built, one in the red-and-white striped scheme, and one in "engine gray". Those get old fairly quickly, so I'm doing mine in various what-if getups inspired by the real world. The U.S. sold F-5s and F-16s all over the place - and this was destined to replace those, so it's those countries' markings that I'll be using. So far I've got a Malaysian bird built, and I think this one will be done in Ecuadorian greens (more on that later). The start: And after a couple of hours of work: Canopy was future-dipped immediately after starting. Going to spray some paint in the cockpit tonight so I can get that all detailed and decaled to close that up. Just need to work on the legs and we're good for camo. Ordinance - 2x AIM-9Js on the tips, 2x LAU-3 rocket pods, 2x BLU-27 napalm cannisters.

Thanks Todd! I actually had hoped to spray the cockpit last night...but I spent a good bit of time digging through both the decal box for schemes and some Hasegawa weapon sets for the right combo of ordinance. Good start... same ones we saw in Top Gun movie? Close - but not quite. The "MiG-28s" were F-5Es, which are the predecessor to this plane. The F-5 was powered by twin engines that didn't produce nearly the horsepower this monster had.

Nice choice to get things going again Dupes. Glad you're feeling better. F20's were sweet looking jets. Don't see many of those kits around these days. Great start too.

Well apparently I'm banging this one out, just with a bit of a break in between. Heh. Looks like I lost the pic of the in between step - that being painting up the cockpit. It's in there! Have to wait until the canopy masks come off. Top pic is the Tamiya Light Blue step for the underside. Had a bit of extra paint in the airbrush, so I continued with a light coat over the top as a bit of a primer. Bottom pic is masking followed by the first of the two greens I'll be using (to eyeball-match the colors from an Aztec KFIR sheet that has Ecuadorian AF birds on it). Next up - dark camo green!

Dang, already on page two since noon! Busy day on the MSC! Let's see, first thing I did this afternoon was freehand the darker green camo pattern using ever-trusty Tamiya: Then a bunch of masking...first for the black nose: And for the white bits underneath: Plus a bunch of small-parts painting. Headed down now to lay down a coat of future in prep for decals. Talk soon!

Thanks man! I dig it too. Going to look even better once the decals are on. Debating whether the future I juuuuust got done spraying will be dry enough to start in on them tonight. I hope so? Heh.

Current status - decals drying. Might need another helping of Micro Sol before I can clear coat...will check when I come home for lunch. After that, time for some detail painting and weathering!
