This is a gift for my dad who has always wanted a bright red 50's-60's Corvette. As this is the first car on a workbench full of "dirty old armor", any advice from experienced car builders would be appreciated. The body was washed and polished underwater with 400 grit paper, Primed in white, Polished again, underwater, Primed again in white, Finally given 2 layers of red Testors Lacquer (polished wet with steel wool, between layers), Followed with a final layer of Testors Gloss Lacquer. Here's where it stands now: My local club guy showed me how to use Bare Metal Foil product around windows and trim and that seemed simple enough. The interior looks to be straightforward in terms of painting and building. Any advice on Whitewall tires? The kit included the black rubber/vinyl type of tires. Thanks, John

A lot of work done. The body has been given Testors Gloss Laquer and the interior painted in acrylics and oils. Reading of the internets indicated that the front wheel mounts are too high, giving the car a 4 x 4 look. They were correct and the mounting axles were cut and repositioned about 3mm. Too high! New position: The under frame will be painted black. Then comes the Chrome and waxing, Lots and lots of waxing.

Nice color in the C1! With regards to the white side wall try using white primer with circular template or try to print out with a white decal paper... just my 2 cents...
Cheers!

Thanks for following! It's been a few weeks but I think I'm getting around the final bend towards completion. The interior and under frame have been glued to the body. Now the chrome can start. This is my first time using the Bare Metal Foil product. It works a treat! If you've never tried it, you should. I could see this stuff being handy for airplanes and sci-fi alike. The foil comes on a peel and stick sheet. Cut off what you need and the press it down firmly with a toothpick or other non-scratching object. Use tape to guide the tip of a new blade along the edge of where you want to place the chrome effect. Peel the tape and foil off together. Oddly shaped areas may require extra care and cutting. I'm also adding panel depth with a simple oil based wash. Is there something better for this purpose?

Nearing the end with the car. You can still see spots with the missing windscreen and around the tires. But otherwise, we're almost ready for a final shine and mounting to the base. The base is resin and is available from www.coldbasementmodels.com The base was designed for a 1/35 Sherman tank. But it works just fine with a 1/25 Corvette as well. The figures are vinyl and I'll be doing a complete resculpt of their clothing. But their poses will remain the same.

It has that nice 50's feeling about it... the kit that is. Hey, do they still produce kits with the diecast metal bodies? I had a few but never built them. I thought it would be a great idea to add natural weight to them. A good or bad idea? So what's your Dad think of his new shiny red 'Vette? Looks awesome to me. Jeff

Hey, do they still produce kits with the diecast metal bodies? So what's your Dad think of his new shiny red 'Vette? Jeff I know some kits are still done in die-cast because I've seen a few builders working/modifying them. But plastic car kits are easy to find and I've already got a workshop full of paint and glue designed for plastic. I think dad will like it just fine. He used to be on a Mace missile crew back in the early 60's. I built him the old Renwal kit as a Christmas gift two years ago (not an easy build). So a red Corvette would also be a kit he would enjoy. It makes a nicer gift than a tie or a pair of socks!
