Put a stocking over the end of a vacuum to find small item like as P.E. and plastic part.

But guys... if you use one of those clear plastic floor mats (so office chairs roll easier) that have the little spikes on the bottom side then the carpet monster is defeated! They don't cost that much at all either. (okay, that's my FREE tip for the week) Jeff

They don't cost that much at all either. (okay, that's my FREE tip for the week) I have one of those...unfortunately it only covers part of the area where the workbench is as I use it mostly for the computer desk that is across from it. I've found it's good for 'echo locating' a part if something falls onto it but it also has the unfortunate tendency to allow a part to bounce/skitter further than it would otherwise...usually back into the carpeted area and into the CM's jaws! Murphy's Law at work I suppose.

Bouncing? Are you sure you're working with styrene Bill?
Either that or you need a shorter chair. LOL

Bouncing? Are you sure you're working with styrene Bill? Either that or you need a shorter chair. LOL Jeff I'm firmly convinced that there's a unique set of laws of physics that apply to model parts and nothing else. Chaos theory in particular always comes to mind! It never ceases to amaze me how much energy a part accumulates and how fast it can travel in the relatively short distance it falls (only about 3 feet)...of course if you add tweezerpulting into the equation then all bets are always off!

Thats an awesome idea, this will be perfect for me since I have hard wood floors, and the parts always seem to fly between the wall and bookcase LOL

Not that I am calling anyone out on this but the plastic clear mat I mentioned is not as dense as our hardwood floors so I never have experienced it bouncing off in another direction... it stays put where it lands. Tried this with concrete and wood/ceramic flooring and I get the bounce but the part when dropped on my mat stays right where it has impact with it. I have more bad luck when the tweezers send my part into orbit (and therefore ricochets off into never-never land) than getting to it's correct destination, and that is on the model where the cement is. Come up with THAT solution and you'll have my complete & devoted attention! LOL Jeff

All Great ideas. Multiple options improve the odds of defeating the carpet monster.

Ultimately the best thing is to eliminate the problem. Catch it, put it in a sack, tie a brick to it and toss it off a bridge into the river. I have a dedicated dust-buster that I use to goes over the search area. Then I empty it into a kit box top and goes through the debris. It has an extremely high success rate. Bill I am in 100% agreement about where these things end up. I think the variations in the laws of physics is directly proportional to the distance the parts travels. Maybe we can get Neil Degrasse Tyson to do a PBS segment with the math on that one. trick I use to narrow the starting search pattern is to take a 2nd part... if there is one... and drop on the, well lit, carpet and observing the bounce. Many times I followed and arc from that point and landed on the missing bit. It's scary that first time though. "What, am I nuts? I've already lost one and I am dropping this on purpose! I think I need to up my meds."

Not a bad idea Marc! Love the CM-Trap, you should patent and market it, will be a huge seller I think. My trouble is that I have all this workspace area that I could be doing the work over but invariably when I get comfortable and 'lean back' into the chair is when I end up dropping something. Never fails...
