Not one to let my bench sit idle for long...pulled out this beauty of a kit from Airfix on Saturday afternoon: One of their new tools, man you get some nice stuff for next to nothing in cost. I love new Airfix!! You can see the Eduard mask already in place above. I would not even attempt to build this kit without it. Look at all the frickin' windows! Assembly moves along pretty quickly - several subassemblies to aid in ease of painting, but otherwise very straightforward with very good fit. I'll be doing the 2nd option that the kit comes with for markings - the bottom one on the box art. Lots of white accents (including the engine cowls) that look very sweet. Got far enough to warrant spraying the white to mask off before pushing on: Pilots (Hans and Fritz?) are primed, need to do some detail painting on them so I can seal up the canopy and start on the RLM 79. More soon!

Mask are mandatory on any 110 build that's for sure. This looks like a really nice kit too.
Started Saturday? Painting already? Wow... I can't wait to see what you do with it. I love the lines on this airplane.

When I'm on a roll, I don't mess around too much! I'm pretty fired up to see it all painted up myself.

I've never actually done an "old" tool Airfix kit to compare - were they pretty bad? These new ones are gems so far...done this, one of the Spits, and a 109 (with a whole pile more ready to go).

Wow Dupes! Building faster than those things could fly. I really like their new stuff and keep an eye out for them. Started some general work on their Hurricane. Very sweet.
And yes Dupes, old Airfix was bad. Very outdated molds. Hornby was the best thing that happened to Airfix. Gotta give them credit though for recognizing they had to re-invent themselves to survive.

I thought that might be the case, but good to know for sure! They've gotten a bit tricky reboxing their old tools in new-look packaging, so you have to pay close attention to item numbers. Trying to compile a list of the new mold numbers, but it's pretty darn confusing.

Thanks man!
Forgot to bring my memory card home with me last night, so no pics. Painted up the pilots, not much else (unfortunately). Will be sure to take a photo before I glue the canopy on tonight.

Tried the same thing Dupes. Never did get the Airfix kit numbers figured out. Bought an SBD Dauntless, took one look and dropped it in the circular file. Decals were the only salvageable part of the kit. Glad to know the 110 is worthy.

Hahahaha...nice. Will try to edit some pics tonight - if not then tomorrow morning. Hoping to start slinging paint on this tomorrow in the hopes that I can have it done for Sunday's show down in Mass.

Wait... you will "try"??
You need to remember the immortal words of Yoda my friend...
Luke: "Alright, I'll try"
Yoda: "NO! Try not! Do or do not. There is no try."
Post 'dem pics man!!

I have one to post, anyway (D&D night last night). The dudes are painted up well enough to occupy a cockpit. Not a TON of detail in there, so I gotta fill it with something, right? Their uniforms are a bit too blue, but will have to suffice. Added some simple tape belts to make sure they don't get tossed in the event of a crash. Mounting the MG for the guy in the backseat then the million-window canopy gets glued down - on to paint!

Alrighty...charging toward the finish on this one! Don't know if I'm going to make the show this weekend or not, but if I do, this one will be coming with me. Sealed the pilots up under the canopy, sprayed some RLM66 at the same time as the wheel wells so that the inside of the glass is the proper color. The wells look thusly: And like so after masking: Underside blue is on, masking for the top applied: And the topside pre-RLM79: AAAAAAAAND post-RLM79: Probably my favorite part of building aircraft - when you get to pull the wad of Tamiya tape and Silly Putty off of your build and hope the paint scheme came out right!

Thanks guys! Unfortunately I should have gone with a slightly higher contrast mix for the shading...most of it got swallowed up under the future/flat layers. Wonder if there's a way to calculate that fade percentage? More pics as soon as I can take them!
