A buddy of mine that I gave the HMS Dreadnought to as a gift did some reading on her and once he found out that its one and only combat action victory involved ramming and sinking a German U-boat, he asked if I could add a 1/350 German WWI submarine to the display case for scale and reference. Scrounged around and located a 1/350 Combrig kit that was available of the UC-1 class of mine-laying subs. Granted it's not 100% the same to the U-29 that Dreadnought sank (the UC-1s were coastal boats and therefore slightly smaller), but it's close enough for what he wanted so we decided to roll with it. Plus it was on sale for $25 so the price was right! The kit is not going to win any size records...the hull is a one-piece resin cast and measures just under 4 inches in total length. My buddy sanded down a piece of wooden dowel for it and I supplied the brass rod pins to mount it. The kit is PE aside from the hull but was missing the radio mast and periscope, so some brass rod was added to supply those. After about 4 hours, it was assembled. Not a bad little kit considering! Some quick airbrush work with the same grays that I used on the Seehund had the hull painted up in no time. I let that sit overnight and came back and added some more highlights/shading with the airbrush to get it to this point, where it's ready to be sealed up and lightly weathered.

OK I am not going to call you professor from now on... you are the captain now!
Great start Captain Plunk! I admit I like the sound of the new title better...

Cute little thing! Hmm, Andy and Leon - seeing as Bill's now meddling with German subs, shouldn't his title be Kaleu Plunk? (short for Kapitän Leutnant, title of German sub commanders rofl-roll)

Bob, it's definitely the smallest 'commission' build I've ever done! The things we do for friends. Andy, I'll take Herr Kapitan Professor! So long as you aren't Tenille! Todd, quick is right...all of a dozen parts and all but the hull were PE! Leon, the weathering is going to be a most interesting exercise...very little room to play with but will do my best. Marc, I can understand you wanting to avoid it, even if you are crazy enough to attempt 1/144 stuff all the time! This is a very small diversion, regular tank production will resume as planned for 2015 never fear. Dierk, you raise a very good point, the proper decorum must be observed! Herr Kaleu Professor has an interesting ring to it I must say.

Had to break out my smallest brushes to weather this tiny little guy. Did an overall wash of Raw Umber and then did some very tiny dot filtering with some gray shades. Details really pop out now and show the quality of the casting IMHO. I also found the little MG tripod mount that installs in front of the sail that had gone AWOL earlier, so it got added as well as an extra detail.

Andy, have to make sure the pressure hull can take the strain you know! Bob, I agree, it had catapulted into oblivion a few days ago but turned up as I was returning some of the brass rod I used back to storage. Sometimes the model gods are merciful! T, looks like it will make it with room to spare. Thanks as always!

Very nice indeed. It actually looks bigger than it really is. I sized the font accordingly.

So cute... mama whale and her little calf. Nice BTW. Thanks Marc! It's amazing how far the technology advanced in the 30 year span represented by the two craft. The WW1 boat had a test depth of 50m, surfaced speed of 6.2 knots, and a crew of 14. The Seehund had a test depth of 45m, surfaced speed of 7 knots, and a crew of 2! Andy, the scale difference between the two is of course huge, but putting them side by side really shows it off I think. The Seehund is just over 12" long while the UC-1 is just under 4".

Go for it Rob...but be warned, you'll have to work on it with the Optivisor permanently attached.

Thanks Jmart! The U-Boat Laboratorium is who produced the design for the Combrig kit as an FYI.

Bill, if you ever happen to be in the city of Munich in Germany, make sure you pay the "Deutsches Museum" a visit. Seeing everything what's in there is too much for one single day, but for example since 1919 they have the original U1 there for exhibition, in cut-away form!
