So today I did my usual 40km drive on the way home (which is generally a pretty mundane drive).... until I passed by a shop that I have never seen before! There was a huge collection of trophies in the front window, so on the off chance that the shop sold trophy bases I quickly jumped in. Turns out the owner has run the shop his whole life but rarely opens now because he is winding down and about to start his pension. He took a genuine interest in my figure painting and he let me have a look at his stock of bases... from plastic, through to wood and marble. When he told me the prices of the various bases I almost fell over...he was asking for next to nothing!! Most were priced between 3-12€ and some were BIG and I mean BIG... I also mentioned about getting some engraving done for some titles to go with the bases and he made a flat rate for me of less than 2€ (2.30USD)...metal with text and any style included!! I left the store one happy camper, orders are in and I received a free beautiful marble base! I should keep my eyes off the road more often

Cheers Leon, I have been making my own bases lately for future projects and as much as I enjoy working with wood etc. this was just an offer I couldn't refuse

WHOA!!! In the local mall the engraver wants 12€ for two lines, consisting of 20 letters. Excluding bases. In my former home town we had a cup seller, so I know what you mean, I still have some small marble bases left (for 2,50 € each). Such shops are always a good address. Im coming originally from the Ore Mountains (Saxony), and we have loads of wood craftsmen here and there. Some weeks ago a friend gave me some "breakfast boards" that are always a good base. Costs: Nada. Some carpenters do bases as well for low money. And even better than some standarized supermarket or "professional" bases. But it depends of course, what the customer wants. And the money is a factor too. But I wouldnt spend 20€ or something for just a base. Just my 5 €-Cents.

That's a great deal. We'd be surprised what we would find if we looked and stopped more.

Yeah, you will find the coolest things in places you have never known before! I have collected "tons" of tropical woods from a crafts store for little money; they are laying in my cellar to get ripe in some way and before I can woodwork them. All we can do is to keep our eyes open (and the wallets closed!!)

Any pictures from the haul? Finally got around to posting some photos! I almost forgot....the store owner asked if I had kids and I mentioned that my oldest boy (10) plays football, he ducked into his office for a minute and came back out with a football trophy for him...no extra charge, talk about service!! Needless to say my boy was happier than me today The haul: Hope you are all having a great weekend!! Cheers, Shay
