Hi,
I'm looking to purchase some black primer. I've been using grey vallejo primer in the past and been relatively happy with it. Scratchmod's video was a big help. I've heard the AK and Ammo formulas are different then Vallejo's and handle a little differently. Is one better then the other with regards to finish or ease of use, or is it just a matter of pick up what's on sale?
Thanks for your time.

I am afraid you have opened can of worms!!! LOL But I do agree about black primer and I have been using it more now than grey primer.

Hey Jeff,
To be honest, most of it comes down to application and personal preferences before name brand. All of these paints/primers, albeit acrylic, are different chemically in nature. It is not that one is better than the other if you approach the application differently somewhat. If you keep the pressure low (12-15psi) and mist on thin coats built up, both the AMMO and AK Primers will give you the same durable finish you get form the Vallejo Primer. I use Vallejo's Black more than anything else because I like it...but I also have it...LOL! It also is slightly thicker than their grey primer which gives me a bit more control over the consistency of the primer. It is the only primer, for the most part, that I thin before shooting. I had heard and read form some folks that both the AK and AMMO primers are too thin resulting in less coverage. Both are designed to be applied as I described above, in thin misting coats building up to the full coverage.
Not sure any of this helped you out any...hope so. Good luck!

Why changing a winning team?? If you are happy with what you use now, why taking risks on using another stuff "only" because it is available?? I think, in this categories the differences are so minimal that you won´t recognize it. I for myself haven´t used any primer, even no one on pewter figures. And never had trouble.

Thanks for the input. Was curious on everyone's opinion. It's easy to jump ship to the latest and greatest sometimes. Some of the Ammo weathering products have won me over almost instantly, so its enticed me to give them a shot. Thankfully Vallejo primer still comes in the 17ml containers so I could test run it for a couple bucks.
Thanks again.
