I have built this kit probably six times over the last 40 years, this time it's gonna have a little bit of extra help A guy by the name of Paul Budzik has a corrective webpage published on this which I will also be taking advantage of by way of reference. This will likely not be completed anytime soon. Regards, Mark

With that much practice you should be able to do it with your eyes closed (another group build that will never be: building with your eyes closed rofl-roll)

Thanks for the interest guys
Dierk I will have to rely on muscle memory as the one between my ears ain't so great anymore
The idea is to represent a well used vehicle with quite a bit of fender damage/loss as commonly seen on '48's that were operational in the central highlands and jungles of Vietnam. WIP pics within the next couple of days most likely

Thanks gents So now it's chop, fill, and grind time. The fenders seem to be missing quite a bit of detail; I must find some pics for reference. Here I have the turret face ready to accept the aftermarket mantlet and have matched up the right half to the turret ring Plastic got a bit thin but can still be worked with. I probably will not follow all of Budzick's guide on this but likely much of it. Regards, Mark

Patient seems to be holding up well so far Mark. Mantlet will add some nice detail for sure.

Bill the resin is well done. I've never heard of DEF model before but it seems they make a pretty good product 4bo thank you Sir and yes this will represent a Vietnam tank More done The grab rails and turret bustle rack took a fair amount of time but the kitparts were overscale so needed to go. I got the rack a bit cockeyed but not too bad...Ah well I can always say a tree fell on it Regards, Mark

Looking good Mark. DEF Model stuff has been around for a while but they aren't all that well known unless you're looking for specific stuff like what you need for this type of kit as an example. Keep up the good work!

Thank you gents A bit more done Sharpened up the bow (Tamiya molds it too blunt) Trying to radius the suspension bumpers into the hull. Good thing I'll be making this dirty The DEF Models searchlight/IR emitter in primer There's a lot of PE that I won't be using because I am terrible at it. Regards, Mark

Bill does this mean I'm a plastic surgeon? Ready for paint at last I tried some more PE, ended up wadding it into a ball and stomping it flat. May be childish but a great stress relief. I also tried to thrash the fenders some more but was not smart enough to thin the undersides before I glued the hull halves together. Thick plastic does not co-operate with such treatment...oh well maybe next time Regards, Mark

You'll have to add MD-S to your signature now Mark (s for Styrene!). Fender looks the part even if you did have to wrestle with it a bit to get it done.

Nice work Mark! Spending most of my time on the dark side of modelling working with kits that weren't even top of the pile in the last millenium, I really appreciate what you're turning this old dear into. I too have a love/hate relationship with PE

PE is from the devil! Mark, I should have chimed in earlier on this, but I'm a believer in the common opinion that Tamiya got the ride height too high on this kit, supposedly because they based their kit on an example that had the power pack out, and maybe some other heavy stuff. When I build their M48, I cut the shocks and move the suspension arms so as to lower the model 2-3mm. In your last set of pics, I see the suspension arms on, just wondered if you had mounted them as the kit has you do so, or if you'd dropped it a bit. It really makes a noticeable difference when comparing to pics. For a while, I had two M48s in my display case, one built OOB, and the other with the suspension dropped, and the lowered model looked proportionally correct based on pics of the real thing. BTW, it bugged me enough that the un-lowered model was gifted to a friend's dad who served on one in Vietnam. I really like what you're got going on so far, I think you're modes are going to really improve the model. I have a DEF Model Magach3 conversion in the stash, and recently scored another Tamiya M48, thinking about getting some other bits together and getting started on one myself.

Bill thanks and there's another job description the guidance counselor never told me about in high school
Dierk thanks also and I think that this is a fine kit, it just needs a little help here and there
Russ yes I did lower the suspension, I've been hearing the complaint about it for years. The story I heard was the same as you did so that would sure account for the extra height. I think the adjustment will make a big difference in the final product, and thanks for the kind words and encouragement
I have the basecoat on and am halfway thru the next steps, will post when the next stage is achieved
Regards, Mark

Leon, Bill, thanks guys Sabre thanks also good to see ya here been awhile Painting the tracks has taken forever, still have the inside of one to do. It's rather tedious May want to do a bit more lighter shade drybrushing on the vehicle; I don't want to take it too far Regards, Mark
