As you all know I build soviet stuff, but I've been tempted for a while to build a Panther Ausf. A in soviet service. I'd really rather not shell out 50€ on a Dragon kit (plus AM) as my ski-mask has been eaten by moths and my AK is out of ammo. Is the Tamiya kit 35065 a viable alternative? Are there any pitfalls to look out for? I'm assuming the kit comes without Zimmerit, so should I do my own or go AM? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Dierk , I have never built this kit but had a quick google look. I would say you are good to go with this kit there are no obvious features that would not make this a mid/late Panther A . The exhaust layout is correct , has the correct cupola and drivers view port . There might be some small corrections as the build progresses tho . As for Zimm , I would go for home made .... I built Dragon's A many years ago and used milliput fine for the job but it all comes down to preference

There are some big flaws on that kit...namely it's missing a row of road wheels! The vinyl tracks are sorely lacking, and the detail level all around is quite low. If you're looking for something as a test bed for techniques it's great, but for a show-quality build you'll want to look elsewhere.

Cheers mate - I was afraid of that. I hope I'm past the testbed stage...ah well, best start knitting a new ski-mask.

Having built the kit before I gotta go with Dupes on this one. The Dragon kit is so many miles better that the extra scratch is worthwhile.

If you cant get the Premium Dragon A then you are laughing , great kit and has everything you need . PE , Ali Barrel and Magic tracks .
Edit , on reading reviews, the Tamiya does get a good ole slating , however I have seen good results with the kit too.

Thanks gents! Looks like this project is going to go on the backburner for the unforseable future There's no way I can justify spending that much on the Dragon kit when my stash is already bursting at the seams. After a bit of reading it looks like the Dragon needs AM tracks as the magic tracks are only provided in the pattern for the right hand side - not that I'm counting rivets, or anything so I'd be looking at 80ish euro already - to put it into perspective: just got the AFV Club Lend/Lease Valentine for just under 30 € including shipping.

Hi Dierk!
Difficult one. The DML Panther ausf. A is very nice, and probably the ''coolest guy'' in town. The Tamiya is not so good.
But i have a ''weird'' solution...i only don't know if its cheaper. Zvezda also makes a Panther. Only its a D version, and no PE stuff is added here. 100% plastic. Oke, now you need a turret. Italeri also makes a A version as well as a G early version. Italeri kits come sometimes cheap, when looking for sales. The G version comes with some PE mesh for the engine intakes.
HTH,
Remco
