Hey guys, After a long break due to shifting and getting settled into the new pad I have had some spare moments at the workbench. My girlfriend and I are big fans of The Walking Dead and the urge to get started on a diorama with zombies was just too strong! I was first contemplating a scene with a large number of walkers and one vehicle but it started to look too busy for my liking..so I expanded it to incorporate an extra vehicle and a workshop wall as a backdrop. At the left front there will be a girl on a motorbike who has just let off a head shot, most of you will recognise her and a few other figures from Masterboxes "Zombie" styled kit. The Masterbox figures are very nicely sculpted compared to some of the other figures from MAIM and Not Yet Dead. I was extremely dissapointed with certain figures, they almost have a wax like look to them with little or no detail...nothing like the box art or sculpts which are advertised on the companies web sites. This project will be a challenge, having little or no experience with vehicles I have already started on one of two civillian cars from Takom. The figure that comes with the sedan will be converted into a walker sneaking out of the car to ambush! I needed to have a backdrop of some kind so the figures and vehicles stood out a little more and draw the viewer to the action going on at the front and came across this wall from Add On Parts. Unfortunately it arrived with broken parts...the down pipe and steel beam on the left corner of the building will be replaced with something else as they were heavily damaged. Luckily for me I have a few free days coming up and the Xmas break so I hope to post some more pics soon. Any comments or suggestions are welcome!!

Very cool project!!! The setup looks great so far. The good old "how to find a good figure" problem. Although new 1/35 figures are swept on the market almost daily, its quite hard to find civilian figures, and even more zombies etc. You just said it: some of them are too far away from the promises. And a Dremel isnt always an option. A matter of taste of course is the picture frame. It looks okay, but a wooden base would maybe look better imho. Of course its your decision. Will the building get a roof for a sniper maybe ("Ey, walker... heres a surprise for ya!").

Thankyou my favourite wizard friend! Lucas..I still have to work on the photo frame, it will definitely be given a deeper base.. coated in black. Your sniper idea sounds cool..I have the MB set of desert looking girls(name of the kit doesn't spring to mind!) that I was thinking of using within the scene. Thanks for your input and yes, for the price of some of these figures especially the MAIM ones a conversion with a zombie head would be better money well spent!

Looking good Shay. Very pleased to hear that you are including a motorcycle ! I used a picture frame as a base once. Worked out OK. I often use cheap wooden Chopping Boards. Good solid chunks of wood that you can often find at reasonable prices and available in many sizes. Looking forward to seeing this take shape.

I like the idea Shay, this has a lot of potention, a Walking Dead diorama. You hit the right atmosphere already with this street scene. This is a cool project !

OK, my two or more cent! Idea is cool of cause. I think for mysef doing something like that, but no city scene, I have other things in mind. THE WALKING DEAD rules, so to say, and I love FEAR THE WALKING DEAD, too! Let me first take a look at the base. To enrich the theme, I would go for another idea: Make a rotten wood base, with imitated rotten and soaked wood, dremeled away and disgusting look. A fitting name plate, rusted and full of patina should finish it.
For the figures: My problem is yours. The offered Zombie kits are crap, more or less. The Maim stuff could be placed in the garbage case, and not yet dead is similar. Maybe it sounds a bit arrogant, but I have sculpted Zombies years ago which look more detailed than the stuff available. Here you will have to add work galore. Resculpting parts and figures would be a must, I guess. You can leave some of the walking puss as background figures, but should add two or three Herozombies for the forground of cause.
Do not forget to add debris and garbage galore. Mig makes some coo garbage stuff and a newspaper THE DEAD WALK headline could look not bad. So, go and DO IT!

I had a look at that. Zombies are not really my thing - they lack wheels, but that is most impressive. Wow .. clever way to support the chopper. Really well done.

The dio is brilliant, never seen it! And I thought the sculpting of four Zombies was ambitious. Seems like I have much to learn in the future. But such a project would be mindblowing for me. Ideas are there enought of cause, but...

Oh dear, the Chapman brothers... Their artworks are really terryfying (especially their "Twins" if you know what I mean)- and beautiful. Lets say theyre polarizing. Chapmans know no limits.

Woah, sick like hell and very tastefull! Greatly done, I admire their fantasy richness. Their work could be discussed like hell! Mig pointed me some years ago to a diorama which could be from them, but it was a real nightmare: Holocaust scenes with zombielike skeletons, NS soldiers as guards, torturing demons and absolute Hironymus Bosch like. It was very disturbing. Sadly, I have no link or infos where to watch. All I read was, this diorama was destroyed whilst showing in an exhibition by some angry people. Very sad!

That's what it was called: "Hell"! It was destroyed in a warehouse fire in 2004. It comprised about 60,000 figures in nine cases which were arranged in the shape of a swastika. "I’m quite glad the original burnt because it wasn’t very well made. It was clumsy and inaccurate" -Dinos Chapman. They have since made an upgraded version called - wait for it - "F*****g Hell" which is more inventive and technically accomplished. Cheers, M

That it was! I remember me sitting there in unbelief and gruesomeness for this really fantastic work. I could not say, that I "loved it" but it was really a piece of art...

Hi guys, Just a small update of progress on the diorama. I fell down the stairs during the weekend and busted myself up pretty good so at home this week!! Leg got a bit mangled and needed stitches but could of been worse...stairs are made of natural stone with very sharp edges.. Anyways,I started getting the building cleaned up as there was a lot of damage caused while on transit in the mail. The left hand corner wasn't looking the best so I removed the drain pipe and steel beam and replaced these with an old sprue and some thick textured paper card. I scratched a table and ladder from some left over pieces of plastic card and came across an old set of oil drums of Tamiya which I have given the salt/hairspray technique. Next up was the garage door..this gave me a number of nightmares! My first attempt at weathering didn't look realistic for my liking so I stripped the paint off and started again, the product I used should of have been safe enough for the resin but it started to curve slightly. I used this to my advantage my cutting the garage door into two parts with the idea of having the "bent" doors slightly open..perfect for a few zombie hands trying to pry through! It still needs some washes and extra work done to it. Lastly, and my least favourite part when dealing with figures was drilling into their legs with a 1,2mm or 1,5mm drill and leaving these intact so it's easier to clamp them while painting and giving them an eventual sturdy footing once placed on the diorama. I don't have an airbrush as of yet so the figures are primed firstly in black and followed by a light grey from Vallejo. Having problems uploading more than a few pictures here so the photo will be in the next reply!

One should not sniff solvents then take on stairs, pleased to hear that you survived. Your doors and drums look great.
Why go as heavy as 1.2 or 1.5mm. ?. With 1/18 and 1/24 scale figures I often straighten out firm paper clips - about .92 to .96 of a mmm. I drill a hole around .95, insert my pin into them and superglue it in. Leaving a good inch to hold the figure with and later pin it to the base with. Just under 1mm is fine on these much bigger figures so you should be able to go less than 1 mm on 1/35 figures which means a smaller hole so reduces the chances of drilling through the side of a leg. - Just a suggestion.

Looking good Shay! Sorry to hear about your argument with gravity - soft body/hard stone interface cannot ever be a pleasant experience. Thanks Dierk, let us just say it wasn't caused by glue fumes as Kiwi mentioned!! @kiwi..I hardly get the chance to visit the LHS, so I usually buy drill pieces from the local hardware store. I have a sort of Dremel tool but anything less than 1mm doesn't want to fit properly, hence the larger size bit. Next time I will try out your method! Cheers, Shay

Ah, I see, your Karate lessons work well, but this time the stone is the winner... silly stone! Hope you receive your ability to WALK soon and no more than blue-green spots on your leg will remain (maybe you could use yourself as a model for painjobs on those zombie folks, hehe!)
Surround looks really cool, the garage comes out great as the drums do. The main focus will be on the zombies, their paint up will eat up tons of time I guess. Any plans to do some detail sculpting on them here and there?
