indeed this is some serious eye candy you are showing here Bill. She looks very good with her shoes on! Love the welds which you added to the turret btw

Clean and stunning build, Bill BTW, I had to use 72 links per side, exactly like yours

Thanks BJ! The T-34's tracks play a prominent role so have to do right by 'em! The kit-supplied links aren't the Magic variety so might as well get the benefit of the workables out of the bargain for the clean-up effort.
Wouts, thanks! Always neat to get the tracks over with and fitted, it means that the build is moving closer to the finish!
Luigi, good to know the 72 count is consistent. No idea why the MK set says the DML kits need fewer than the Tamiya kits...unless there are some much older DML kits out there that had shorter hulls or something that I don't know about. ;D
Thanks modelfreak, glad to have you along for the ride.

I should have expected a mid-week update from Bill's factory since nothing was on TV last night. MK tracks always look great especially on your builds.

But seeing you had to fit the same number of tracks makes me think they made a mistake Watch out, btw, in my experience they are quite fragile...

Hey Bill, The tracks really look great! All that cleaning did payoff bigtime! How would you compare the MK to Fruils? The Mk deatil looks crisp - very nice! Gary

T, Rob, and ER, appreciate the comments as always! Andy, it's a tradition with us (my degree is in history/political science/education) to watch the election returns but since it's a bunch of 'hurry-up-and-wait' between the results being reported, it provided the perfect opportunity and timing to knock this one out! Luigi, glad we can mutually validate the results! ;D There's no way, even with the idler moved all the way back to the lowest point, that 70 links would do the job because of the paired arrangement...so 72 it is! MK tracks can be a little fragile depending, I've found that the secret with any of their sets is to make sure all of the pins are fully seated and avoid using anything too 'hot' in terms of finishing and painting them and things turn out ok when it comes to handling and working with them. Will keep an eye on these though per your warning as I've not used a T34 set by them until now. Gary, I can't really answer that question as I've never used Fruils before. MK sets have the advantage, as Dicky points out, of being cheaper (generally) than Fruils and since they are styrene, they paint up exactly the same way and don't require anything special in terms of blackening or other processes, so I gravitated personally towards MKs early on and have stuck with them since as a result. I prefer workable tracks in general because of the flexibility they provide in detailing and finishing in the weathering process vs. static indy links but everyone has their own tastes/preferences! Dicky, I agree with you that it all comes down to the builder and the finish vs. the starting materials. Fruils have their advantages I suppose in certain situations for modelling 'dead' tracks and sag because of their natural weight vs. styrene or resin but I've never had any issues with getting similar sag when called for with MK or resin workable sets. You're right about the scale weight and 'heft', to me that added weight presents an added difficulty in handling and moving the model vs. lighter tracks but that's just my view. I've seen stunning results achieved with both static and indy links of all types...just comes down to the builder and what they are comfortable with and their skill level in the end.

The tracks look real nice Bill. I am still looking forward to trying those. The ones I ordered for the Enigma arrived too late so i will just have to wait... or buy more

Marc, that's too bad that you couldn't try them out on the Enigma...but now you have the perfect excuse to buy another kit of that tank family! Madairbrush, thanks for the comments, there are a lot of track makers out there now and I've heard some horror stories about some of the AFV tracks but nothing about their T-34 sets. Is it an issue of detail or just difficult assembly?

OK Boys lets not get down on Friuls. I shop around and the price I pay for Friuls is about the same as your plastic or resin tracks.
The last two sets i've bought have been $30 even, $37.50 is the highest and not on ebay. I'm sure with the world economy as it is the price will only get higher but until that time heavy metal is the way to go for me.
Bill that sag is perfect, good work bud. Tony

Very true Tony especially since Fruils are produced in Europe and the exchange rates between the dollar and the euro have an effect. Prices have come down on them in recent years in terms of dollar pricing, making them more competitive. The wonderful thing about the hobby is that there's a wide variety of products available to builders and choice is always a good thing! Marc, now why doesn't that surprise me? ;D

Zerozeke, yep it's very interesting how equipment changed hands and was used by the different sides. The Germans were masters at recycling captured gear but it sure made their supply efforts a nightmare! T34s were valued for many reasons so not surprising to see them get swapped around as the circumstances changed, thanks for the heads-up on the photos at beutenaroud.
Nate, thanks as well, am getting ready to fire up the compressor and start in on the paint work, so expect an update tomorrow if all goes well.

Yes indeed ER! Some good progress to report after some quality time in the spray booth. Since this is going to be a whitewash finish, there was no need to apply a primer coat as the base coat was essentially going to play that role by default for most of the vehicle. I applied a base coat of Testors MM enamel Russian Armor Green by air brush and also airbrushed some MM enamel Panzer Schwarzgrau for the cupola and other small details while I was at it. Road wheels were painted as well at this stage. Rubber rims were airbrushed with MM enamel Gunmetal and the inner hubs airbrushed with Russian Armor Green in combination with a draftsman's circle template to mask the rubber. Returning to the vehicle, I applied a mist coat of heavily thinned MM enamel Flat White to set a foundation for the whitewash. It also gave me a feel for how well the Russian Green would show through under the white before moving on to the next step in the process. I used a cut-out piece of sheet styrene to mask the rear engine intake screen to protect its contrast with the rest of the finish. Continuing to work with the Flat White but with a standard airbrush mix instead of the heavily thinned mix in the previous step, I built up the finish over the vehicle while still allowing the Russian Green to peek through here and there. I also used two small circle cut-outs to mask the base area for the German crosses on the turret sides rather than rely on the decal sheet 'patches' for that effect. The road wheels also got a dose of the Flat White given their prominence on the lower hull. This will now be allowed to thoroughly cure before moving on to the next steps which will be adding some wear to the white wash in various places as well as working on the tools and other small details.

I know what you mean. Most of my weathering techniques are based on oil paints, so I have to wait one week for each step

Wow Bill!
You just gave me a flashback to the old Squadron Signal T-34 In Action book. There is a Beutepanzer T-34 in there with the panzer gray circle in the turret.
Great work all around! Love it!

Excellent work applying winter camo! It is supposed to look that way if you have a crew spraying at 1:35 scale. Looking forward to your next update! Oh finally your Cowgirls played much better tonight. ;-)

Dicky, thank you kindly sir! Steve, I know that picture you're talking about, I'm guessing it's one that inspired the DML box art for this kit. T, me too although I'm not going to go too crazy with the wear. Will be aiming for enough to bring it to life but still be relatively fresh. Andy, glad to see the scale effect is showing through. It's always a tough thing to keep in mind when painting scale models to avoid the 'hand of god' effect. As for the Cowgirls, I'm a 'Niners fan so they aren't 'mine'. They won against the Eagles which isn't saying much...although my 'Niners should've won the Rams game today a tie is better than a loss.
