This is just something that I have been playing around with. I have a couple of the Italeri water tank trailers on the bench that I work on from time to time. The purpose of this thread is 2 fold. #1 is a test to compare different brands of Olive Drab paint and to compare the effects the weathering will have on the overall color. #2 is to show the custom wheels I had made. The italeri kits have the wrong wheels and just don’t look right. I commissioned Charlie Pritchett to master a new wheel and Celticwerks to cast the wheels. Trailer #1 The first picture shows a base coat of Model Masters enamel # 1711 Olive Drab. Notice the comparison between the old wheel and new wheel. Trailer #2 This trailer will be painted with Tamiya XF 62

Nice work John. Charlie does very good work with masters, and of course Steve is an awesome caster. The OD looks pretty good. I assume you have been reading TankArt vol2 eh...lol. I reread the section on OD paints and actually took a sherman down off the shelf. I just need to get tracks for it but will try some of Mike's techniques on it. What color/brand will you use for the second trailer ? The MM looks pretty good.

The second trailer will be painted with Tamiya XF 62

Cool little tinkering project! Those AM tires are a hack of alot better than the kit ones! Could there be a dio in in the future??

Trailer #2 update. I tried to do a little painting today, but with the rain we’ve had for the last week, my airbrush started spitting a little water. I did manage to get the primer on. I have a few small seams to touch up, then get some paint on after it dries up a bit.

Nice stuff there BJ!! Sorry to hear you getting hit with a bit of the dampness!! Been dealing with this for a while and it sucks! Hence the illegal procurement of the kitchen table early this week while the wife and kids were gone!!! Looking forward to your progress!!!

Waiting for paint to cure on my Sherman, I paid some attention to the water tank trailers today. For trailer #1 I mixed some paint and painted the tires. Mix is 2 drops black to 1 drop dark tire. I then base coated trailer #2 with Tamiya XF62. This is my first go with Tamiya Olive Drab and found it way to dark for my taste. I added some XF60 to it and gave it another coat.

Big John
Nice idea it is always nice to have two apples to make a comparison with, I have a set of those wheels and the are increadable. The best resin cast parts I have ever seen. Somewhere down my list I have a Ben Hur trailer to build for those wheels.
I have always used XF62 on all US vehicles and have always thought it was a little dark but over all in the display case it is a hard call for me to make, wonder what a comparison with a spectrophotometer would show show what we need but in looking around me shop I see I don't have one so that is out.

While I was busy today with decal work, I decided to mark the trailers as well. The kit decals were very old and frail, they fell apart immediately and was unable to use them. I dug into my spare decal stash and came up with some markings that would work. I just realized that I made up the same registration number on both trailers, LOL Oh well, they wont be used together, only in this paint comparison.

I don't think the DoD will mind there BJ, just so long as the paperwork's in order! Nice multi-tasking session on the decals.

Those came out real nice, I like that color on the lighter one best. On the XF62 color I just saw someplace here on MSC where someone was using XF62 mixed wit XF49 (Khaki) in 1:1 proportions and I thought that looked OK so I'm going to try that out. Great wheels.

Thanks Bones! The lighter shade is my old tried and true Model Masters enamels. I'll have to go find that thread you speak of and see what the OD looks like. My try that mix my self.
