Thanks for following along! Been away from the workshop enjoying a bit of vacation during the kid's Fall Break. But back at it now! I've taken what I discovered about car #1 and applied it to car #2. A few things learned thus far: 1. It's easier to use parts from a sprue than parts you've scratchbuilt. 2. Symmetry on compound curves is hard. 3. I still like the look of the open engine deck and plan to keep it on the second car. 4. Let Revell or Monogram do the hard stuff. I'll stick to adding the fun parts! Begin with $5 Porsche purchased at club auction.
Apply scroll saw and belt sander. (Black portion at rear was only part of mouse to be used.) Foam, Bondo, plastic spoons and Magic Sculpt epoxy putty.
Also planning the earbud style hoverpads on this one. In fact, I'm deliberately making an effort to have the open engine deck closely resemble car #1.
As always, love it, hate it, think something should be changed? Now's to time to speak up. Thanks for stopping by! John

Nothing wrong with adopting an existing body and then radically altering it in the process. Should be a good match to #1.

Thanks to all for your encouragement. But does anybody hate it? My work from car #1 has convinced me that I really like the look of a sleek, rounded vehicle juxtaposed with clunky, cabinets and awkward plumbing. It's just a design preference, and not everybody is going to like it. But It's a theme I'm planning to carry over into vehicle #2. Speaking of hovercars! Don't forget that today is the day! They land today! So keep a sharp eye out for a floating Delorean. Finally used the sage advice of Dr. Paul Budzik and was able to get all the compound curves of the rear end polished without the seams being visible.
Marking the spots where the "hover pods" will attach.
Clunky and out of place.....and I like it!
Doing some commissioned work on a totally separate project, so I may or may not get much done on this tomorrow. John

Learning a lot about metallic paint. Todd recently posted some neat stuff about new polishing powders from Uschie. I wonder how they do on an enamel base?
I need to let this cure for about a week. Even then, I'll have to be careful about handling it.

The finish looks fantastic John! As for the powders...yup, they will work on just about anything really! Brilliant effects just over flat black...enamel and/or acrylic...better still over gloss black and you can color shift with different metallic paints as well.

That's a pretty good finish John, and the stand you've chosen works well too!

That's a pretty good.... stand you've chosen works well too! Containers like these are great for protecting a model from being crushed while it's transported in my suitcase. The clear ones make it easy to see which model you've got. So I'm thinking about cutting car #1 in half. Compared to the result in using an O.O.T.B. car cabin, my earlier scratchbuilt attempt is looking a little anemic. But I still very much like all the "techno-stuff" in the engine secion of the car. So I'm thinking about running the blue car through the scroll saw and building a whole new crew cabin created from a Revell kit, much as I've done with the silver vehicle. Whatdaya-all-think? John
I would chop it at the tape line.

I like where you're going with the pair now John. Should keep them looking close enough to be contemporary but still different designs. It's also interesting to see what's really inside the bodies of those original computer mice.

And Thanks! Hope your 31st was good fun. We've still got about 5 kilos of candy. That's all probably going straight to the trash in the morning. Soooo remember the car with the blue trim and well detailed engine deck?....Yeah, not so much. After goofing around with the general idea, I've finally decided to ditch the mouse shapes and go directly to car shapes. It's just easier to work from pre-made components rather than scratch building every damned little thing. The new design along with car #2 which I quite like and plan to keep: Any guess as to where I obtained the donor body?

After being absend for some months and thinking about how my future way will be, what will I sculpt and are there chances to finish the elder stuff, I have to make a big bite into the stuff I see here and talk about this and that. Are you ready for getting the first critic, John? Here it comes:
Since all are glad with the new concepts, I am not for some reasons. Mostly taste reasons. Your first concept was perfect. Lots of work to do, but great, SF-like design, technically detailed and a clear form and believable. Than you began working on the second car and, in my eyes, it went "wrong". Because the concept of using real Car kits as basics, this is no more the SF-way you are going, it is "only" simple" kitbashing. The silver build looks for me like a Pick up and is not the way I personally would have build it (remember mate, this is only my opinion and I am speaking only about the design, not the quality of the build). If I were in this situation now, I would stop further detailing and make some sketches to illuminate the way before you. And where you can go with this forms (change them, you would never be lucky with it when finished!). They look too common, to "normal", to too much in our world and not in a future world where anti gravity cars are used.
I hope, you are not too angry about my opinion, but I see it this way (and if you plan to add those cars in the fabulous river base with this excellent water) maybe rethink of colour etc. I am more in a desert like paint job with tons of dirt and dust and equipment stashed on the vehicles.
Phew, my two or three cents on this project! Good luck, my friend. And you should go your way of cause!
Frank

I hope, you are not too angry about my opinion, but I see it this way. No. Not upset at all. This is exactly the kind of input I wanted. There were serious problems with the first attempt (the blue and silver vehicle). I was finding it just about impossible to create symmetry with the compound curves created from epoxy putty. It was far, far easier to use ready made plastic parts as an armature for the putty. Also, the plastic of the mouse was coated in a sort of soft, rubber-like material. this stuff proved impossible to sand and didn't like to hang on to paint very well either. There was also the problem that too many people were instantly recognizing the earbuds for exactly what they were. So the earbud idea will need to be changed, or at least disguised, fundamentally. The vehicle interiors were also giving me trouble. Attempting to sculpt the interior from putty just wasn't providing the polished, straight and even lines I wanted. It's been easier to add to kit parts. In the end, it was the trouble with getting any sort of close fit around the clear parts like windshields and side windows which convinced me to switch over to conventional body designs. Kit parts just fit a lot better than the cobbled up junk parts which live in my Spares Box. Hang on for car #3 (the red one). I think you'l like the look of this one much more. Thanks again for your assessment. People who don't like our stuff are often more valuable than those who do.

John, this could be a real cool and "winning" discussion! When I am going to do something similar, I try to do a concept sketch of the thing I want to build (to avoid troubles whilst building as you mentioned with your project). When I design something I have the materials or kitparts in mind I want to use and play around with some ideas, what could be done and what is impossible. Mixing kit parts with scratched one´s or sculpted parts is not the problem. Mostly I hate it when the viewer says, cool, you used some Paner IV wheels for details. This must be avoided under any circumstances! And this is why I sculpt most parts, even those for some technical stuff, after own designs (or given ideas). It is a lot of work to do, sure, but I think you will ahve more fun doing so EVEN it is more work! So I am very curious how you will proceed and be sure I add my comments, harhar!
