Dupes' 2016 Completions #41+#42 Dec 31. Done!

Continuing the trend from previous years, getting the roster of completed builds put together. Set a personal record last year...as always, hoping to beat it this year! Starting the year off right with three entire days totally to myself will help - the extra day in February should push me over the top gunning for 50! Going to do my absolute best to clear as many shelf queens out as possible this year. A) I need the space on my bench! and B) then I'd be free again to heed the allure of the stash without feeling guilty. Mmmmmmm the staaaaaaaaaash

2013 Pregnant wife, junior born. Only 13 completed. That was a rough one!
2014 Lot less time riding the bike due to the kid meant more bench time. A LOT more bench time! 35 completed.
2015 More of the same...getting my bench focus solid. 40 in the bank!

So, of course, while weathering the Wildcat I couldn't help but try to be efficient and was working on a 1/48 ICM P-51K alongside. Economies of scale, and stuff! Been plugging away at this thing for...almost two years already. Started out at the LHS while we were doing a recruiting drive - the owner gave our club a few kits to work on to show people techniques and such.

What did I learn on this build? ICM's kit decals are GREAT! They're very matte-looking on the sheet, but they are extremely thin and respond wonderfully to microsol and set. ICM's fit certainly isn't Tamiya-like, but respectable. Detail is quite high. The kit, though, has none of the "finesse" that Tamiya brings to the table. Individual blade prop with almost no positive attachment points was the pinnacle of that. "Guess and glue"? Oh yeah - Tamiya Acrylic X-11 Chrome Silver actually makes a decent NMF finish. No primer, just fire and forget like a Sidewinder!

My own sums suggest that a 90% reduction in current output levels would still result in 70+ models for the year!

That's twice as many as I've made in the last 18 months - and I'm currently sticking to quick-builds kits.....

Hahaha...except I fell asleep last night before I could post up pics of number 3 and 4. Editing them at work right now!

Alrighty. Needed something for the "closed top braille armor" category, so I cracked into the Dragon Churchill kit. Bit of complicated fit getting the fenders to cooperate with the hull and the tracks, but it turned out ok in the end. Used Vallejo Bronze Green Primer, which looked REALLY dark - then I pulled out some Xtracrylics Bronze Green, and the colors are virtually identical. So that's what bronze green looks like!





and the super-zoom to prove that the tracks are actually quite metallic-y:

Next one added to the shelf is another resin Battlemech kit, this one by Ravenstar. The Urbanmech is a 30 tonner designed for close-quarters urban combat. 360 degree vision ports for improved visibility, and a massive (for a 30 ton mech) Autocannon 10 to poke big holes in tanks and small mechs. Went for a vaguely Berlin Brigade type scheme with "Able's Aces" markings.
