So as many of you may have seen Andrew has started a 1/72 scale rendition of Cuckoo, the captured Panther Ausf G that the British used for a time in Europe, using an Armourfast Panther wargaming kit, and having looked through my stash and found I also had a new box of Armourfast Panther Gs I decided to challenge Andrew to a build off.... I did it in the traditional English way of slapping him around the head and neck with my knights gauntlet, while we were eating scones with jam and clotted cream, and a nice cup of tea..... A challenge which he has accepted. Here is what we will be starting with..... WP_20160303_001 And I believe Andrew has already mentioned in his thread, but I'll mention here for completness' sake, 1 tank per sprue, 20 parts per tank, and as he also mentioned Cuckoo didn't have the barrel cleaning rod tube, so only 19 parts to make it..... This will be a serious exercise in turd polishing for the pair of us ..... WP_20160304_001 So there you have it, Andrew, its now public, over to you...... ATB Sean

My first progress report..... My attempt at making the track/wheel blob less of a blob and more of a track/wheel component..... Sean

At this rate we'll have to change the name from MSC to PMSC Hope 'the nice cup of tea' was Yorkshire Tea - the only tea worth drinking IMO I was under the impression gauntlets were supposed to be thrown down in front of the person you wish to challenge - the slapping around the head happend later when gauntlets turned to whispy gloves that, when thrown a breeze might pick up and deposit in front of a much butcher opponent than the one you wanted to pick on Oops, I think that was the linguistic equivalent of rivet-counting I'll shut up now and crawl back under my rock...just one last thing: you can't polish a turd Sean - but you can roll it in glitter. We know Andrew's not going for the winter camo - are you?

All So it's now public and yet another first for me - my first ever duel build!! When Sean first suggest the idea, being a relative newbie as I am, the use of the word 'duel' made me think of a confrontation, a battle etc. think... ....Manchester Utd at their imperious best under Sir Alex vs a Sunday league team.....the West Indies cricket team of the mid 80s vs a local village side.....Mohammed Ali vs some 'white collar' lunchtime amateur.....The Roman Legions vs British Celts.....Napolean vs the Russians at Austerlitz.....Any machine gun vs troops going over the top in WW I.......Polish Cavalry vs German tanks, September 1939.....France, Belgium, Holland and the BEF vs the Wermacht May/June 1940..... ....and we all know who out of the two of us is the better modeller!! However, as Sean pointed out to me " ...the idea behind the forum 'duel build' is to promote your own, and learn other peoples, skills...". Queue a HUGE sigh of relief!! So what we've discussed, is the idea of me building slightly behind Sean to see what I can learn from him, in very much the way... ...a student would learn from a teacher... ...a guru would instruct his disciple... ...and Yoda*** discipled Luke skywalker! (see how I cleverly managed to work in the current Star Wars GB theme ) And you never know I might actuall give him an idea or two!! And I also see he's off to a flying start already!! So I hope you all enjoy the ride! I'm really looking forward to it!! Andrew *** Please note. I am not for one minute suggesting Sean is short, very old, bald, green skinned and has pointy ears - not that it's an issue if he is!!

We know Andrew's not going for the winter camo - are you? Nope. Not because I don't like it but mainly because all my other stuff is green, so I thought it might look a bit out of place in our battles! Not to mention not trying to make it too complicated! Andrew

We know Andrew's not going for the winter camo - are you? Unsure as yet, I'm more drawn towards a SCC15 finish so its more obviously a Panther in Allied/British use, where as I feel if I spray it with its white camo it could look more of a Panther from any front where it snowed, just with a bloody great star on each side of the turret,..... to the uninitiated of coarse ,....... I do have a Zvesda Panther Ausf A in the stash that I have planed to sit next to it in proper Heer colour camo, so its even more apparent, The other Panther in the box from this set has already been ear marked for another special project Sean

Actually... you can, at least according to the Mythbusters: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiJ9fy1qSFI OK, we now return you to a less noxious form of turd polishing! I'll be following along... (to what you guys are doing, not what Adam and Jaime did...)

I'm fairly sure what Andrew and myself are trying to achieve is to roll it in glitter, then polish the bejeezus out of it

Progress report..... Added the missing sections to the rear hull, added extra depth to the track grousers, added the differing box strengthener ribs, filled in hull gaps.... Started adding missing hull sections to drive sprocket and cut off the mud guards as I'm going to remake them from foil.... ATB Sean

Looking very nice there mate!!! Gives me a few things to think about for mine!! and maybe even 'borrow'... Looking forward to more!! Andrew UPDATE
That looks even better now you've removed the duplicate picture and replaced it with the correct one!!!! I was thinking of doing something similar for the front drive sprocket but I'm going to steer clear of removing the front mudguards - manly on the 'lack of skill' front but also I'm not sure, wth all the handling they'll get in our battles, that foil would be stong enough. It really depends on the manufacturer as to what detail you lose, these 'wargame' kits are simple in the extreme, as its there intended purpose just to be a representation. Compare that against the Flyhawk Pz II, some ACE kits and most of the Milicast resin kits and the detail is all there, especially in the Flyhawk kit.

Hi dogfish As you will have already seen from my posts my stuff is used for war-gaming with my son, so detail is not so key. That said, as you can see, what Sean can do with a quick build is amazing and working on these sort of kits gives me a chance to develop my almost non-existent skills and not put an expensive kit at risk in the process. These kits work out at £3.75 each, so if goes badly wrong I've not lost much money! Hope you continue to enjoy our joint journey together! Andrew

Bit more progress..... after several failed attempts to replicate the Zimmerite I finally returned to my old faithful soldering iron and special tip. The tip I use in the iron.... The results so far..... Sean

Luckily not to tedious due to the size, I did go cross eyed several times though at the size of the pattern.
Glad you both like it, I was a bit worried it wouldn't look right, hopefully it'll look spot on as a representation of zim under a bit of paint and weathering and I'll be less concerned... I guess we are all our own worst critics.

Hahaha, you wait until someone forms a committee or the unions gets involved, that efficiency will go to hell in a hand basket most riky tic I can assure you!! I think it best I don't comment on unions other than to say they made my late father's life a total nightmare..... As for Zim - a very nice job!!! I take it you just press the tip into the pastic and hey presto!! Out of interest what wattage is your soldering iron? I remember you saying previously it was 'low' but how 'low'? Thanks as always for sharing!! Andrew
