My wife always jokes that I do best at contests with the builds that I slam together in the final week before the show...she's even gone so far as to say that I should do them ALL that way (ever wonder why I build so fast?). So I've got a little over two weeks until Downeastcon at the beginning of April, and I'm lacking an entry for "Best P-47". Decided to crack into a 1/48 Tamiya P-47M - couldn't pass up the two blues scheme. In order to be efficient, I figured I may as well bang out a 1/72 Revell Germany P-47M as well. I don't speak "Revell Color" so I can use the Tamiya callouts on both kits as I go. Last night's bench:  Painting up cockpits and getting fuselages sealed tonight! |

Update! Got the cockpits all sorted out. I hate spending toooo much time on these, as you can tell in pic number two that a lot of that work is already invisible. Oh well. The out-of-box pit in the Tamiya kit is easily the best I've seen in 1/48. I have an Eduard Zoom set that I'm not even going to crack into - the only part that would have been a substantial upgrade would be the seatbelts.   You can also tell that the drop to 72nd scale (and to Revell) knocked the detail level down quite a bit in the smaller bird. Still, very acceptable...just not nearly the same as the big one! |

Thanks Leon! Quick update - the subassemblies are all complete, took both kits down to the booth to fire some Zinc Chromate (Tamiya XF-4). Got a bunch of masking to do then I can start in on the exterior painting. Hopefully ready to roll tonight!  |

Finally got all of the masking done...the way these paint schemes go, there's a lot of it. Hope to get the aluminum layer sprayed tomorrow morning before work. Lot more masking to go after that!

I'm a big fan of how the regular Model Air metallics spray - or at least I was. This stuff has got a permanent place in the stable!

Didn't bring my laptop home from work tonight because I knew I'd be in the spray booth for quite a while. That means no update until tomorrow morning...hoooo boy!

Liking the looks of these so far. The NMF turned out well with the Vallejo. I've seen some mixed results with it but it looks like yours hit the mark.

Alright, pics edited! Starting with the pre-booth shot last night. Spent a couple of hours masking off leading edges and various bits that needed to stay aluminum.  First color down. It was a pretty lengthy spray session, and since I was freehanding the camo I figured I'd better give my airbrush a good douching in between colors. Took a break, snapped a pic, and had some coffee whilst I was at it.  Another lengthy session trying to get the patterns to look right without getting any overspray. Success! Both of these colors (provided as Tamiya mixes) are a lot "less blue" than I thought. Think that using box art as a guide has got my expectations a bit thrown off from reality.  Had hoped to spray some future this morning so I could decal after work today, but I neglected to think about the various other colored bits on these guys - prop tips, front of the cowl, and rudder. Hoping to get everything consistent, I figured I had better paint these parts as well before the gloss went down. Had to do a bit of masking on each of the bits, which took some time. Check out those leading edges!  Because of the masking, only had time to get the white underlayer sprayed before leaving for work. PROTIP - when spraying yellow and red, a coat of white underneath makes applying the color you're after much easier! Can cover in one or two passes instead of the dozen or more that you would need to achieve opacity over darker colors (especially dark to light transitions) underneath. Thanks Leon! Final update for today...this thing needs to dry a bit. Got the yellow, red, and sky blue sprayed followed by a substantial coat of Future. I hate having to gloss metals, but not knowing how they react to things like Micro Sol/Set or Solvaset always makes me leery. I'll take a slight loss of "natural sheen" over a ruined paint job any day.  Next up - DECALS! |

Marathon decal session last night...got both birds done. Might need one more coat of Micro Sol to get everthing to set in, but I should be able to seal in the decals and start weathering tonight. Final assembly tomorrow!  |
