2017! I figured I needed to do something on the sizable side to open up the new year. Do I have a lot of other builds going I should be working on? Yes. Should I be cracking into a new kit? Probably not. Am I doing it anyway? Yes! Had the in-laws up for the weekend, so I hadn't done my proper pre-planning and stash-dive prior to today. Blew a couple of hours hemming and hawing over what to tackle...this one finally made it to the top (helped out a bit by the inevitable release of a new-tooled kit from Trumpeter one of these days). Revell kit from the early 90s. Got a Quickboost resin ejection seat and FOD covers, a more modern set of weapons from Trumpeter, and a massive set of decals from Begamot. There are only a few other aftermarket options available, and I don't think that I'm willing to spend $206 (!!!) for the Zactomodels correction...and don't know if I'm willing to wait for forty bucks worth of old-school style Eduard etch. Just means I'll probably opt for a closed canopy depending how the stock cockpit looks. So we're working with the following: Construction starts now!

Very nice...looking forward to seeing you dig into this Dupes! Great way to kickoff 2017!! Time to get busy now that the Outlaws have gone, ey? LOL...I am laughing because I read a post on Fakebook last night where some tool bought a kit off Amazon and it arrived with a slight crease in the box...the plastic was still intact. He complained, they refunded him and told him to keep it. The knob was spouting off like someone gave him a million bucks! The kit was probably perfect too! Enjoy the build....get busy!!

Love it! I remember this for being one of the far better Revell kits, apart from the intakes. Built one 25 years ago myself. OMG, is it really that long? Would seem like yesterday!

Picture time! Been a pretty productive last 24 hours or so. Just to give myself an idea of how big this guy is going to be (and potentially how tricky the fit is), I started off by clipping the fuselage halves off of the sprues. Back in the day Revell was a huge fan of using large horizontal attachment points like this: which means that it took a while to get everything separated without damaging the parts (much). I recommend a razor saw versus sprue cutters - you don't run the risk of cracking your large, irreplaceable parts. That leaves us here: Doesn't look like much, but I got a lot done up to this point. Color scheme picked out from the 25 options on the Begamot sheet (Ukrainian). Reference pic located and I believe paint matched (VERY often a sticking point for me being color blind), and aftermarket parts sorted out. Turns out that I had a CAM set of FOD covers as well, which happens to be the only one that includes the parts that cover the inlets on the top of the fuselage. Looks like they're getting the nod for that reason (that, and they're made specifically for this kit). The shot I'm using to work off of alongside the Begamot sheet: It's not the exact aircraft, but seems to be awfully close, perhaps even from the same Squadron. Of note - look at the variance in colors between the front aircraft and all of the ones behind it!

Also got the Quickboost (Aires) bits separated from the resin blocks and primed. Dropped them into the meager cockpit - going to have to see how this looks painted up. I'm thinking 95% this will be closed canopy. In an effort to get one of these boxes off of my bench, I decided to crack into the Trumpeter ordinance and get that all built up. Found an "official" loadout online that I ran with. R60MK/B-13/R27/Gas/R27/B-13/R60MK. I'm not even going to bother putting any of the Revell missiles together - they're a far cry from the Trumpeter stuff (despite it being a set from back in 2005). Comparison shot here: Revell released this kit in 1991 after we saw the MiG-29 for the first time in '88 (or '89?) at the Farnborough air show in France. Not too shabby, really, for the data that they had to work with! The Trumpeter stuff will look much better, though, with more detail, recessed lines, and correct pylons for all of the ordinance (versus the "generic" pylons in the kit). More to come!

Luckily for me, I'll be covering up those intakes with FOD covers! Any chance you have a pic of your build? Or do you still HAVE your build?

I still have it, but slightly disassembled because I intended to repaint the exterior to modern standards and weathering techniques. I even bought AM decals from HAD.

Thanks Bill!
Not too much time today (IPMS chapter meeting), but I hope to get the cockpit painted up in between my other obligations.

Good start Dupes! Personally I use a saw almost exclusively to take parts off the sprue - I find it gives me much more control...so long as I don't accidentally saw into the part

Only been four days, but man...feels like forever since the last update. Finally got the ejection seat and cockpit done up as well as I can - time to seal up the fuselage halves! The Quickboost (Aires) K36: Some of my fiddly bits were broken pretty badly - that's the risk you run with those little bag-packages vs boxes. Nothing too major. With a closed canopy, won't see them anyway. Added some lead wire ejection handles. And with the kit pit: Same deal - won't see most of this anyway (good paint practice, right?). This kit definitely needs a replacement cockpit. Not 1991 any more!

C'mon, with proper paint job (like yours) the cockpit is still looking good. In there the real MIG-29 is that scarce as well!

She is indeed big...I'm mocking up the larger parts right now. I think I'm going to need a bigger bench.
Pics tonight!

Thanks Boyd! Alright. First I got the fuselage halves welded together - that took some finagling. Cockpit isn't going anywhere any more! Still some parts to add to that, want to wait until after all of the exterior sanding is complete so I don't knock anything off. Rest of the afternoon was spent getting all of the major components together, wing halves, stabilizers, etc. Wanted to do a test shot to see how big she'd end up being...I'm going to need to throw down some more white paper in the photo booth! Lots of sanding in my future - guessing it'll be a day or two until I'm done with that phase. See you soon!
