A couple of years ago i built the Scammell Wrecker with a view of eventually building the Pioner RS100 and the tractor unit (i do have a soft spot for the Scammell`s )........so.... i went ahead and purchased the Thunder Models RS100 Pioneer. I got all sub-assemblies built and primed ready for paint and then the problem started, the rear deck would not play ball in regards to where it was supposed to locate......for some reason the main deck fouled the winch!!, the instructions used very thin Black arrows to indicate where it was to locate on the chassis but the arrows would disappear into dark shaded areas on the sheet and made location a bit tricky........maybe i was a mm out or somat but she ended up taking flying lessons at the end of the day and nearly ended up in the bin ......however i put the bit`s in a box with a view of salvaging somink later..........well that `later` has arrived I decided to turn her into a post war civilian used wrecker using civvy colours etc with a full scratch build of the rear deck. I completely repaired the chassis as the rear suspension was broken off on one side, the winch had disintigrated and the engine and cab required some vast amounts of TLC .........the rear deck was used as a template for the new one just to give a floor size...the rest is history.... This will be a bit piccy heavy so i do applogies in advance.........a lot has been done so i`ll post WIP pics in stages I started by building a whole new deck frame as the original one wasn`t suitable for what i wanted due to it`s shape, also i don`t add wheels this early in the build but to make sure the chassis was square after it`s flying lesson i had no choice. The winch was WIP at this stage as i had to cobble one together......doesn`t need to be perfect as it is hidden so a representation is good enough. More soon

I'm really lookin' forward to this one Boots!! It's funny how when things aren't quite working out with a build (or any given project for that matter) how we can come back to it all later with fresh mind set. I think sometimes we get "locked" when we're in the middle of a big project like this one and re-approaching later can give us a whole new perspective.
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one pal.

Ok....here ya go.... Used my finished Wrecker Scammell for height dimensions......the deck obviously sits very high on the chassis and needed to be right.. A basic deck just to check the damaged chassis levels. The cab on the Pioneer differs from the Wrecker..........the Pioneer roof is one solid piece from screen to rear deck, so this meant it had to have a new rear wall for the cab conversion.. Cheers chaps

If you remove the windshield, built a wooden box to cover the engine and paint the whole thing in rust your mock up would be almost exactly the same as the one we used to drive around the field during hay season when I was a kid. This was probably the first vehicle I ever drove by myself when I was 7 or 8 years old.

Thanks for the great pics Ossie and really appreciate the great comments , she is way advanced from all the above at the mo but i`m just gradually posting earlier WIP pics .......i find with this style of build there`s no issue of rivot counters, just free range artistic licence. I`m defo gonna have a look at the link you sent so that is much appreciated for maybe future exploits, i`ve gone into Matador mode now , i no it`s not every bodies cup of tea but it`s nice to know there`s folk out there that do like tea Thanks again bud

I passed one for sale on the side of the road last year and even though it was a rotted out hulk they wanted $4,000 for it! It had some sort of log splitter thing on the back of it. One marina nearby still uses a restored one for lifting boats in and out of the water. There is simply nothing you couldn't model with these things as a chassis.

I agree fella, we do have a lot of these in the UK that attend the shows etc, some are stunning. I found a pro-boards type site that was for Scammell owners......most were derelicts in restoration stage but others were fab, like you say.....they ain`t cheap even for a basket case!!

Your scratch-building skills are amazing! The work on that ladder...WOW!
What did you use to make all the rivets around the bed of the truck?

John and CD........thank you kindly fellas...`tis very much appreciated Yes the ladder was a challenge...thats puttin` it mildly .....as for the bolt heads, i use the MENG sets, these were 0.8mm...the nice thing about the MENG ones are the fact you get the bolt head and the nut side so you can make it look like they go all the way thru whatever it is....i simply lay in place and then add a tiny drop of TETC.....they were even more challenging than the ladder
