Hello friends. I’m coming in a little late on this build but I will go ahead and document the painting process. This used to be the bane of my build process but lately I’ve really come to love and appreciate time spent on paint and weathering. 🍻

Looking good Chad! What paint scheme are you going with? Continental Panzer Gray, or a DAK sand scheme?

Thank you! Oh man, I’ve been going back and forth on that one. I’ll do this one on panzer grey. I’ve got a Takom Panzer I hot on the heels of this build which I’ll make DAK.

The grey was used for over half the war and many vehicle ran the whole thing without ever getting painted but the colour is sorely under represented in the modeling community since camo is flashier! The grey allows for some really sweet weathering effects.

Thanks guys! Laid down a coat of Vallejo Model Air Panzer Grey mixed with a little dark gray. I actually ran out of paint so I’m gonna have to continue tomorrow. However, I did lay down a light dusting of hairspray prior to the application of the base coat so I can have different weathering options . 🍻

Looks great! I'm curious as to which paints you used... care to share? I absolutely will. I used Vallejo Model Air Dark Brown 71.271 with a little Black 71.057 mixed in for the first coat After that coat was dry, I shot straight Dark Brown to give some color variations. Honestly though, the only reason why I put this color of primer coat down, was in case I wanted to do some chipping later. Otherwise I just would’ve used Stynylrez gray primer and moved on to the Panzer Grey base coat.

Otherwise I just would’ve used Stynylrez gray primer and moved on to the Panzer Grey base coat. Thank you for the info! Is this your workflow? Primer Primer shading Hairspray Basecoat Shadowing Highlighting Detail painting Chipping Heck, your just about there. This is just a general process for me with armor. •Rub down with 91% Isopropyl alcohol to remove oil/gunk from handling. •If I’m going to chip and rough up the subject, I apply Vallejo Model Air 71.271 German Red Brown as a primer mixed with straight Model Air black. o If the subject will be clean, I go with a light grey primer Stynelrez primer. •Apply a light coat of German Reb Brown mixed with Black. You don’t want this coat to be heavy. Just enough to cover the bare surface. o This is 60% red brown, 40% black o Let dry for about 30 minutes. •Apply straight red brown to introduce highlights and color variation to bland base primer. o Some say this has no effect on an opaque surface color, but my eye can see the difference under the Panzer Grey. •Apply a matt coat of your favorite lacquer based clear. •Apply a thin mist of TreSemme Ultra Fine Medium Hold hairspray. Just 2 or 3 light passes is all you need. You’ll know your there when you see a light satin sheen on the primer. •Apply base coat of Model Air Panzer Grey mixed with black. 70% Grey to 30% black. •Apply a coat of straight panzer grey to introduce highlights and tonal variation to the bland grey surface color. •Spray camouflage if needed at this stage. •Chip with an old semi stiff brush moistened with water until you get your desired surface effect. •Seal all that with a nice lacquer gloss clear. •Decals, then another layer of gloss. •Apply filters of 95% Turpenoid Odorless Thinner to 5% Windsor & Newton color. •If the base is panzer grey, I’ll probably use Yellow Ochre, then Prussian Blue until I get the desired effect. •Apply a dot filter of oils to create yet another layer of color variation. •Seal all that with another shot of matte clear varnish. •At this point I begin the external weathering. o Oil washes and applications of whatever I want to present. Mud, dust, streaking, track weathering, etc… •Put her on the shelf and roll into the next one!

Wow what an awesome response! That is a great workflow. How long would you say your process takes from the time you finish the construction until you finish the model?
You mention oils several times, have you read or watched any of Michael Rinaldi’s Oil Paint Rendering (opr) tutorials?
+1 karma for you

So, something like this would take 2 or 3 weeks start to finish working a couple hours every other night because the build process is so straight forward. But, something like an ICM1/48 Ju88 would run into several weeks. I have not seen any of his videos; but, I did see a Tiger he did on the cover of one of his books at a hobby shop I once visited, and it looks more real than a real tiger! 😳

So it’s gonna be a few days before my paint comes in so I’m going to focus on the Panzer crewman that came with the tank. Since this is a figure I’m going to continue this portion of the WIP in the figures forum. 🙂

Oh boy, I received a small parcel from Sprue Brothers a couple days ago which contained the paints I needed to continue with the project! So it’s back to the bench. This update includes laying a very light mist of hairspray then let it dry overnight. I followed that up with coat of Vallejo Model Air Panzer Blue Gray mottled onto the surface to break up the dark panzer gray base coat. Then I sprayed Vallejo Model Air Panzer Gray mixed with Vallejo Model Air Insignia White in progressively lighter tones until I reached the desired effect. A lot of this will be covered up with filters, chipping, scratching. weathering, etc. so I’m not really going for precision at this point. Next phase will be tomorrow and that will be the beginning of the chipping process. Fingers crossed the paint isn’t so thick that I cannot activate the hairspray. 🤞

Nice work, Chad. You don't see these in any scale really, especially large scale. Very nice. I recall back in the mid-80s one of my first armor kits was the ESCI 1/72 version. And I only bought it because I thought it was a cute little tank! 😄

I'm looking forward to seeing how this chipping pans out.

Thanks buddy. This is probably the part of the build I dislike the most. You just have to trust the process and believe that when it’s finished, it’s going to look the way you want it too! 😄
