OK, best laid plans of mice and men and all that.... plus a flooded basement slowed my ability to post pics last night My build is done and I have done a basic weathering (which is really hard to see in these pics - I am struggling to get good pics with my phone, so may need to invest in a semi-decent camera). I'm going for used, but not abused. A vehicle preparing for Kursk, not 5 days into the fighting. I have also started to paint the commander figure (he still has a pin in him, so he does not quite sit right): Once I have everything dried out downstairs, I'll try to set up some better lighting to get higher quality pics.

Sorry about that basement issue. The Panther, however, looks excellent.

Excellent Boyd! Your 1/48 turned out absolutely awesome. Very nice level of weathering. I can only hope I can achieve a fraction of what you you have done on mine. I am really impressed as well as inspired.
Very sorry to hear about your basement. We just finished getting our kitchen sub floor replaced after extensive water damage. That has kept me from putting much time at all into my 1/48 Panther. I look forward to further pics of your stunning Panther.

That was definitely a bit of rain! I hope I still have a driveway in the morning. Water was coming over in three places over about a hundred foot stretch where I have two four-foot culverts. Yikes.
The Panther looks great! Suitably grungy. I don't know how weathered I want to go yet. Hmmmm. You definitely win being willing to tackle the commander fig.

First off, I'm sorry to hear about the flooded basement Boyd ( bbrowniii). No fun at all and I hope you get things sorted out with that soon bro. It is good to see you back around and posting progress on this despite the ongoing issues at home (which looks just fabulous BTW). I showed my son the zoomed in view and then scrolled down to the small rule that you had underneath the build and I thought his eyes were gonna pop out of his head. lol Very impressive Boyd..... .very impressive.

I know I want to add some scratches on the skirts, and maybe a little wear and tear around the hatches, but I don't want a really beat up vehicle. Problem is, once I get going, I tend to go too far, so I'm trying to do the "less is more" approach.

Guys
Thanks for all the positive feedback and encouragement. That is what makes this place great!
And thanks for the well wishes regarding the basement. The good news is, it was not all that bad. The bad news is, I had to scatter everything while it dried. Trying to get things back together now.

I think a lot will depend on how I "base" it. Those little bases I got are pretty cool for doing a little bit of groundwork, but not for a big, elaborate scene, so I think it may help me limit things.

Alright, so, another week, another flood in the basement. This one coupled with a power outage, so a little more stressful than the previous one. Fortunately, however, the damage was relatively minor, the power is back on, and things are dried out (mostly). And that means I could put the finishing touches on the Panther. I'll admit, I wrestled with the weathering of this one. I really wanted to do some scratches on the side skirts and some chipping, etc. However, the more I looked at Panther D's prior to Kursk, the more I came to the conclusion that less is more so, here it is, the "final" product: I do intend to put this on a (very basic) base. Sort of a "tank on a plank" meets "lipstick on a pig" It won't me much more than this and some static grass, maybe a few odds and ends, but nothing significant. If you see anything that needs attention, please feel free to let me know! This GB was a TON of fun. It's great to be a part of the "old" forum again!!

Well done sir I knew ya had it in ya
Your weathering instincts are quite right. Panther D's were rushed into service without enough testing time, much like the M-16 in Vietnam with similar results. This means they were not in service long before the A series came out that addressed many of the weaknesses present in the D.

I know the D's were rushed to the front to be ready for Kursk and many of them (most) had mechanical issues and never got into the fighting. So I thought the lighter weathering made sense. Thanks for backing up that conclusion.

Thanks for backing up that conclusion. Also need to consider that the vast majority of the battle was held in the middle of open plains. No buildings to plow through, trees to knock over, fences to scrap off paint just lots of long grass and grain fields to gently brush the tanks. Even post battle those that survived would be dirty but not all chipped and scraped up. Your weathering is perfect for the conditions.

Thanks man, That's a great pic. And you are spot on. The terrain they fought in was definitely "gentle" on the tanks. Well... minus the bombs and mines and all that other blowey-uppey stuff...

This has got to be one of the most fun small scale builds that I've seen in a very long time and I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the fact that this is 1/48 scale. Just unbelievable!!! What a turn out and I enjoyed following along with this. Boyd I couldn't be happier that you're back and I'd hoped that you as well as other veteran members like yourself would like the fact that the place is back up and running again. It's really good to have you back brother.

Just beautiful work. Hard to believe how small it is. You did a masterful job on weathering it and getting the look down so that it looks just like the real thing great work.
