It's somewhat unnerving to start slathering mud and dirt over our nice, clean models. I understand that very well, and I was much too timid in my first two armor models. But, buy some modeling mud and get started; it gets easier and more fun as you go, and as your model begins to look more "real" you'll find yourself grinning. 😁 Trust me on this-you can do it, Lyle! Make it muddy, dude! 😁

That is the same paints I use for my rust. The salt technique is very effective with them.

In my "Chinese food brain", I keep forgetting about mixing processes. . . and the wonder what happened. This looks perfect for this vehicle. Thanks for the tip and reminder.

You have total control over what and where you get the flaking paint and rust spots just like the sample pictures of the dozer shown earlier so you can do as much or as little as you want.

Well....Happy with some, will be washing off and redoing some. The blade is coming along. Tomorrow, I'll hit the top edge with some yellow and see what happenes. But, maybe not. The salt is looking like dirt clumps to me. The "hood" sucks. I tried to wipe it a bit and it came off in large pieces. Oh well. I'll remove it tomorrow and try something else. Drawing rust marking with a fine pointed brush is different.

I'm very interested in this, I have the Meng D9R in my stash. I've always been fascinated by the big iron. There are a bunch of cool Youtube channels where guys go out and salvage old iron that has been sitting abandoned for decades. It's amazing to me that they can get those machines to run. That D9R Brian is an amazing kit, it has options for USMC or IDF, most of the instructions lean to the IDF imo however with some google time varients can be found. I'm thinking of doing mine on the 1070 HETT.

Dozers only look nice the day they roll off the line. After that, they spend their entire life in filth and muck. She is looking really good.

Unless they are military... then they get hosed off and cleaned up every time that they come out of the field... probably an occasional repaint now and again as well. I know that the Air Force and Navy don't like their aircraft and ships getting all that mud and dirt brought inside of them.

Depending upon when and where they are in use of course. A modern National Guard unit that get's inspected every other week could have perfect paint and be spotless. One in the middle of the jungle in WW2 or Vietnam may never even see a hose much less be spit polished. I have never seen a civilian dozer that looked great other than on the dealer lot.

When we (Air Force) did our annual inspections and complete tear-downs any cracks went to the welding shop, and any paint scratches or chips were sent to the paint shop for repair or repaint. We certainly took very good care or our equipment. But, civilian equipment largely gets used until it's dead with very little cleaning, if ever.

One builder I follow that does amazing weathering is Laser Creation-World on Youtube. His work is incredible and his techniques have helped me tons. Give him a look when you get time.
You might find this video of his quite interesting..

Try thinning the rust paint out to a thin wash and apply it to the whole thing. It should settle in the low spots and around the high points. Will give just a hint of rust tone to the paint.

I have never seen a civilian dozer that looked great other than on the dealer lot. Hah! The Guard doesn't do inspections like that. There is not enough time in a reserve training year for such activity. They mostly do accountability by the full timers, and the heavy equipment is usually not with the troop armories, but at larger Guard Camp or Active Army post motor pools. And the goverment GS employees who maintain them don't do that sort of spit and polish clean up stuff... But yes, a dozer in the field anywhere, anytime is gonna look dirty. It's in garrison or prior to transport that they get a little enforced TLC. I can't imagine any First Sergeant or SeaBee Master Chief permitting otherwise. "I need a detail!"

Hi Guys, Nice work on the D8. I went with a subtle approach on my D8, more of a worn look as it sits on a lowboy trailer - Man that DOES look good ajo! Welcome to Modeler's Social Club bud. If you would, post up an introductory post in the Introduce yourself section so we can all get to know you. I'm definitely looking forward to more of your work after seeing what you've posted here. Okay...look up DORK in the dictionary and my picture is there. Is this like secret code to get into the room with the ice cream? I'm dense.
