I'm very interested in this, I have the Meng D9R in my stash. I've always been fascinated by the big iron. There are a bunch of cool Youtube channels where guys go out and salvage old iron that has been sitting abandoned for decades. It's amazing to me that they can get those machines to run.

They run forever, especially the older ones. I still have a Model 12 grader, but in the dim past D-7's, several 1H D-8's and a 36A D-8. I had a lot of fun with a 66A D-9 building a race track for a farmer friend. Not in the category of running forever, but I also used to operate a Cat 320L excavator for him. Might have been the most interesting of all, especially when I demolished a little house. Chomp. Crush..

I missed this one as you've been working on it Lyle. A very interesting subject that has so many possiblities as far as wear and tear/ weathering goes. One could make this one just about as nasty looking as it gets. Watching for more on this beast Lyle.

Very cool project Lyle!
And let’s face it, most everybody would love to drive a bulldozer for one reason or another at some point in their life…. A Sopwith Camel, not so much..

I spend WAY too much time watching those on occasion. Neat ones on tractors, too.

Very cool project Lyle! And let’s face it, most everybody would love to drive a bulldozer for one reason or another at some point in their life…. A Sopwith Camel, not so much.. There is a place, don't remember where, that you can go and drive all the cool construction equipment. A playground of sorts.

That seems to be my "kiss of death" for some reason. I have an old Airfix Hurricane that is done as soon as I get the canopy masked and painted.

The life of industrial/ heavy equipment is a harsh one. They've gotta be able to stand up not only to harsh environments but multiple operators who don't give a rat's a$$ about the equipment. These pictures depict all of these aspects and are FANTASTIC resource shots. +1 Karma to you John!!

John, those are magnificent pictures. I've been doing bits and pieces on this one. Just turned 71 and I think more brain cells just died. These AMT instructions border on useless to me for some reason. Sheeseh. Attaching the diagonal braces to the track frame to the chassis.....toookk me way, way too long to figure out. . Wowser.

AMT kits have a way of doing that.....especially with the big rigs and equipment. It's almost like...."Here's the parts....you figure it all out" lol

This one is back on the bench. I really don't like putting stuff on the shelf since my goldfish brain can't remember where I was in the build and if I remembered underwear or not. There was no real reason that I stopped on this one. Anyway, true to form, stuff is falling off of it. I don't know if the glue is failing or what. Just a couple of things, but still. Part of the slowness may be the drying time of the paint. I'm using Rust-oleum Farm Implement Heavy Duty Weather Resistant Rust Preventative Original Equipment Matching Color Caterpillar Yellow. Must be good. No rust has shown up. It is an enamel paint and takes 24 hours or more to fully dry. Painted the engine fan this morning...now we wait.

Hi Dean. Sorry I missed your question until now. In all this interim time, I've picked this up more than once time and put it back down again. I really wanted to do some weatheing, but will l ikely chicken out and make it show-room ready. Going to be a sparse week at the bench as there are 3 or 4 Dr. appoitments this next week, including a stress test for me.

I know what you mean about remembering where you are up to in a build. I just look at them now and go this is great, they come with some assembly done, like a head start!! I gave up wondering about the underwear, as long as I have pants on !!

Well, a lot of time spent and not much to show. Getting ready to push this puppy home. All the sub-assemblies are and have been done for some time. I want to weather this in a reasonable fashion....not as one abandoned in the woods for 25 years and starring in some youtube video (although those are cool). jeaton01 operated this type of equipment and gave some amazing reference photos at the front of this thread. I really don't know how to make this work, but we'll see. My airbrush(es) are not doing well. The blade face is AK Extreme Metals STEEL. I like that stuff. Looks good. And, here are the weathering products (if I don't chicken out)...Somewashes rust and brown, from The Detailer line, the AK Rust, Staion and Streaking set and other various things I find laying around. The dogs are frightened.
