I can see where those instructions could be a bit confusing and I think you've got the right idea in checking the youtube video out on it to get things cleared up James. Your progress on that engine is looking great so far. I've gotten to where I'll use a Prismacolor Silver lead pencil to highlight details like that Ford emblem on the rocker covers. What do the PE pieces look like ?

What do the PE pieces look like ? Thats an interesting idea. Ill have to grab one of those and see how it works in the future. Thanks for the tip! after checking the Youtube build videos, I could only find one person who used the PE detail set. From this screen shot it looks as though he did not paint it gold and put the PE on. But he is also building a different model technically. You can see the PE part below its a sort of engine bracket on the left side there. Engine looks stellar so far! The instructions look like an explanation one of my kids would give me for something I know right, thank you!

Honestly I’d think bare metal would look fine. It’s the front engine mount and in most pictures of real life DFVs they almost blend into the monocoque where they bolt together. I’ll see if I have any pictures lying around if you want.

Oh I am totally leaving it bare metal. All my reference pictures show the same as you. My confusion was with why Tamiya asked me to paint it, then immediately cover it up. And also, none of the reference photos show any gold under there haha.

Wondering if part of those instructions aren’t left over from a different version of the kit or DFV that doesn’t include the photoetch so they just clumsily added another step? Oddly muddled instructions from Tamiya. Going to look awesome with the PE though.

There is an entire section of "Parts not used in this kit" and instructions corrections where parts are mislabeled. LOL go figure. Small progress tonight. I'm to exhausted from work and stuff. Tiny parts are, well... tiny! I think this is the proper layout for the wires, although I have seen them going straight into the VC so Ill have to research more.

The way those are routed on the 1:1 looks very tidy which is probably the way I would go bud. Doncha just LOVE these teeny parts we get the benefits of working with sometimes in modeling?? Lookin good so far James.

Almost forgot I need to modify the fuel lines before putting all this together. It didn't come out as good as I hoped but as you can see by the bandaged finger, I put a few holes in my thumb with these tiny parts haha

Thank you all. Yea the "injury" is common in our hobby. Specially when you are dealing with a needle sized drill bit, and the piece you are drilling into is at best an 1/8 of an inch wide. Round, and has uneven surfaces! I took another crack at it last night to clean it up and it looks much better. The fuel lines are running in the right direction so that the part will fit in place.

Run a bit of thinned down Tamiya clear yellow in the fuel lines...Gives em the "Got fuel" look...As for PE. Some gets painted some don't. PE can be confusing, just like un-updated instructions! This looks to be coming along really nicely. That Ford (Cosworth DFV) is a sight to behold. Love those monsters. Glad to see your getting over the creeping crud and getting some bench time. Just keep plugging away!! we'll keep tuning in!!!

The 1:1 car had like black protective hose over the fuel lines, and they looked more yellow stained white at the top. So I will try to get as close as I can. I actually have light golden color tubing to replicate the fuel but it ended up not looking very realistic.

Looking forward to more progress James.

For reasons I am not 100% sure about yet, the compressor is back to working normally. Best idea is it had something to do with where it was plugged in. I took a couple days to test it out making sure it wouldn't die on me half way through something. So we are back to work. That's the good news... Now for the bad news. Those who have been around since I started posting, or who go back and review the previous photos will notice something very important that is missing... Yup, that would be the Ford Cosworth. My son, bless his 6 year old race car loving heart, took it off the workbench and "tried to put it into one of his cars" so he could drift better. It has as of this morning, not yet been found. I mean, half of me is so annoyed but the other half is sort of proud I guess? I dunno. Hes 6 and is trying to mod cars already. So Ill focus on that. His mom is just thrilled with his new hobby. LOL

A small local hobby shop sells those and I didn't plan on buying those but now I do since I like to add details to the engines or wirings under the vehicles so I think those sets will come handy but my builds are usually 1/35 so I need smaller tubings.

Ya know how it goes with young'ins...whats his to build is his...what's yours to build is a parts house.
I hope you find that engine..it is going to be a bummer finding just another engine.
