For her 50th birthday my wife asked me to take her to see the fall foliage in New England. It has been her #1 bucket list item forever. We flew into Boston yesterday and tonight and tomorrow night we are staying in Salem, MA. We rented an basement apartment right on the waterline. Currrent view, we are staying in the 3rd house from the right side. We will head to upstate Vermont on Tuesday and hopefully see some nice colors. I checked off one of my bucket list items today when we visited the USS Constitution in Boston Harber.

I can see in the first pic why this was New England to the settlers. Have a relaxing time there, Brian.

Chromedome35, Welcome to New England! Enjoy your trip. If you are still in Salem visit the Friendship. www.nps.gov/places/friendship-of-salem.htmIf you can fit it in the Collings foundation runs The American Heritage Museum in Hudson MA. A few aircraft but LOTS of armor. www.americanheritagemuseum.org/Try and drive some of the Kancamagus highway in New Hampshire. A beautiful drive through the White Mountains. Walk the Flume gorge, about 45 min. kancamagushighway.com/Stowe Vt is very pretty and it has the Vonn Trapp Beirhall. Great Austrian beer and food. It's a bit out of the way, but Ticonderoga is a nice historical area and they have the Star Trek Original series set tour! startrektour.com/Did you walk the freedom trail? Visit Plymouth Plantation? In Salem NH is America's Stonehenge. www.stonehengeusa.com/Cool, but more spread out then its UK brother. The national seashore on Cape Cod is very nice. Groton CT has the USS Nautilus nuclear sub. Mystic CT is preserved as an 18th century shipbuilding community. They still build tall ships and is very interesting. I know thats a lot of places, but they are all worthwhile. If you make it over to the NH/Maine seashore I know a few great places for lobster. Oh, I forgot. The USS Albacore submarine museum is in Portsmouth NH. A nice museum.

How was the foliage-watching? I think you were probably a couple of weeks too early for that portion of the trip. There's always Maine, too!

Sounds like a great trip. When I worked for Oracle ages ago I had to be in the New England development center in Nashua, NH at least once a month. Had one extended project and flew the entire family out for the summer. Stayed in Manchester, NH and did a lot of exploring. Really enjoyed Boston - some awesome restaurants for sure! And yes - the fall is beautiful. Enjoy!

My old home, NE. Changed beyond recognition no doubt. Be aware while driving, remember everyone else will be looking at the leaves and not at what they should. Accident numbers always rose sharply during leaf season as I recall.
Be aware and enjoy

I'm here in CT visiting friends. (Lived here for 49 years) Foliage isn't quite there yet. NE has had enormous amounts of rain this year which has messed up the foliage

Like, last night it was finally cold, and there's a tiny bit of color appearing on a few trees.

Got home from our trip about 30 minutes ago @10:30pm CST
Best trip we've ever taken and we've taken a bunch of them. For those who live in the south, New England is like a different world. Everything is different from the lack of fast food to the really cool local general stores. The pizzarea pizza is to die for. Up until this point, I thought Alaska was the most beautiful place I've ever been and while Alaska has a majesty to it, it is not really accessible. It is a grandeur you view from afar. But New England in the fall, my god it's beautiful. The quaint villages, spectacular colors, picturesque farms and the "soul" of the land have me wanting to go back as soon as possible.
#1 favorite experience: We spent a couple of evenings in Salem MA, we rented an Airbnb that was right on the coast, the sea was crashing into the rocks and the sea wall in our rented backyard. The weather was kind of nasty, cold, windy, rainy and the sea was angry. That night, my wife and I stood quietly at the top of the seawall and just soaked the environment in, experiencing something neither of us had ever experienced before. I can still feel the spray from the surf on my face.
We went from Salem up to Woodstock Vermont, spent a couple of days, then moved to Stowe VT for a couple of nights. From there we drove the Kancamagus Highway over to North Conway Vermont, then onto Stockton Springs Maine for 3 nights. During the days we'd visit the towns and take drives out through the country, dirt roads preferred. We ate some great food, mainly from general stores (lunch) and taverns/restaurants (dinner). We avoid chain restaurants and only eat in local restaurants. In a week and a half, we only had 2 subpar meals.
Good trip!!!

Sounds like a great getaway! My wife and I like to cruise up Hwy 61 on the North Shore of Minnesota when we can. Sounds like you two found a similar sounding place in New England including the pizza place.

Wow Brian! Sounds like our kind of place to be. So glad that you two had a such a memorable time there. I'm right with you on avoiding chain restaurants as we can get that crap anywhere. Those local joints have it all figured out by having the best food anywhere and help to make those memorable moments that much better.
