So here we have Eduards 1/48 Spitfire Mk IXE, weekend addition as well as Eduards Advanced pack for the same. The advanced pack includes Engine, Radio set, Engine Cowlings, Gun/Cannon bays and Flaps Spitfires never parked with their flaps down so humour me on that one. Spitfires need pressure in the system to drop the flaps and keep them down and it was bad form to leave the system pressurize when not in use. The detail up parts are resin, this kit dates from before 3D printing (unfortunately) and I am sure if I can get this together successfully, Eduard will release an easy build 3D version as soon as I have finished. Ideally, I would have built a Mk1 but they don’t do an advanced set or even an engine for a Mk1, so we have to work with what we have. I will show better pictures of the parts as we go. One thing to look out for in these kits is.. You know the Eduard engine will fit well with the Eduard model, like wise the Eduard wheel bays will fit well with the model……..but will the engine fit with the wheel bays 😊, I found that out with the Mustang. What I am getting at is, read many steps ahead from you current position and look out for blind alleys..

NICE!!! I built same kit earlier this year and it was a great kit! Of course without those aftermarket sets you are doing but just couple of sets to make it better. The resin engine you got looks really good!

I use my band saw on pour blocks like that. And yes, I still have all my fingers...so far.

After watching you build the Wildcat I am stoked to watch what you punch out with this Spit and that cornucopia of add ons. I'm all in brother.

Well give me 3D printed parts over Resin cast any day :-) The way this is engineered is a but odd in that rather than give you a one piece cradle frame for the engine, they give you the parts to build that frame. This would be ok but before I start I cant help thinking a jig of some sort would help
These parts have now been freed from their pouring blocks, given a primer and RAF interior green. The parts at the bottom are the cradle that needs to be assembled
This shot shows the detail they have got into these parts, this engine bulkhead is less than 1/2" wide

I would be thinking that a jig to help with assembly would almost be a must for that setup. I will say that there's alot of detail on that engine and firewall. NICE!!!

I decieded that before i do anything with the bulkhead i need to be confident it fits. Because this involves surgery its not a given that it will :-) So this is the fuslarge OTB and this is what youi need to cut off, the huge advantage of using a detail kit manafaturerd by the model manafacturer is that in this case they have produced the model with the detail set in mind so there are faint lines to show where to cut on the inside of the fuselarge halves.........and they do seem to be in the right palce. I have tapped the whole thing together to make sure there are no hidden nasties further on. To fit the bulhead you will also need to remove part of the underside of the wing like this The last picture shows the resin replace ment panel fitted, there are no lines to cut to here so its cut test fit cut etc and here its is "sort off" in place. You can see the bottom middle of the bulhead protrudes at the bottom which is why you need to remove that small section of wing.

Been there and done that with the aftermarket stuff and will have to say that I like the approach of sticking with the model manufacturers for upgrades like this. Makes it so much easier. I'll still us AM stuff but I know what I'm getting myself into.
Looking good so far paddy.

You are doing great!!! I admit I struggled with that part attaching the resin cowling on mine so you are doing far better than me already.

Looking great so far! I agree with adding aftermarket resin to a kit. I like to "sneak up" on the fit by making my cuts too small intentionally so I can slowly fit the new part in sanding a little at a time

Ha ha so I told you all to plan ahead then fell down here by not planning ahead.... the instructions show the coolant pipes from the header tanks attached but if you do this you cant then fit the engine bearer as the coolant pipes are threaded through the bearer frame So put the frame around the engine before you try and fit the coolant pipes
