Well I have come to the conclusion that my new forum home will be MSC. I have been a member of FSM for A LOOONG time and really enjoyed the magazine as well as the community, sure it had its cremudgens and in the past flame wars but it generally was a good place to connect with other modelers from around the world. Recently it has become a miriade of pop up adds, log in issues, and error codes. I'm not computer literate, and don't want to " work" for my hobby. I will miss the folks who remain there and haven't found this site however being here is WAY MORE user friendly and has a much more "homie" feel. I am saddend by the decline of a steafast icon of the modeling world however I can no longer tolerate the effort needed to simply read a thread much less create one. I won't be renewing my subsrciption to FSM this time I hope they continue to produce content on You Tube as the information passed on there is reall fun and informative. Hopefully they can pivot, rebuild, and come back as a better product worthy of my money for subscription.

The FSM forum was definitely the "gateway drug" that got me firmly back into modeling in 2006. By 2011 or so, I had grown reaaaaally tired of the frequent dustups and BS and lack of moderation, and moved on. It's unfortunate. It was a huge, active bunch for a long time, and I miss a lot of the people I used to talk to there.

I'm glad you find MSC a more welcoming easy-to-use forum, that is how we want it to be viewed.
Feel free to invite any friends/acquaintances you have on FSM to MSC. A lot of our new members have come from there.

FSM was the first forum I joined, and I have to say that the folks there have been MUCH nicer than on some other sites where the "Experten", on their self-righteous wings, soar above the heads of us ordinary folk, borne by the hot air of their egos. I have lurked on those sites for many years, but never joined them because of that elitist attitude. Now to be fair, not EVERYONE on those sites are a$$hats, but the guilty ones have the loudest voices. For me, FSM just has constant technical glitches and those pop-up ads get more annoying all the time. FSM can't help it, as they have to pay the bills. I'm pretty sure the forum has to operate on a shoestring budget.
I don't know about you guys, but I have a hard time keeping up with 3 or 4 modeling sites. I am an analog guy living in a multi-tasking digital world. When I joined MSC, I began to lose track of things like what thread was from what site. I get confused easily. And I don't like to cut-n-paste identical threads on different forums, as it feels like cheating. Plus I know how annoying it can be when someone repeats himself. Repeats himself. Repeats himself...
Sorry to hear you are leaving the FSM forum Perry, as you are one of the "Good Guys" over there.

Sorry, I’m channeling an episode of “Happy Days”.
Yep Perry I have your contact info. Once you join da Mob, you don’t quit! 😜

FSM was the first forum that I joined when getting back into scale modeling in 2011. There are a lot of the friends that I've met along the way that are here now because of their good disposition on life and good attitudes(in addition to being great modelers). Sadly, it's not what it once was as far as activity and the overall camaraderie goes but I feel that is from a lack of moderation first then a few other little problems. I'm not going to go too far into it because this discussion has the potential to get out of hand if we let it so I will go the way of gratitude to FSM. Without that forum, I wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to know a good number of you that are here now and that's not counting the skillset that I acquired while I was there. True, I wish things were different over there and one day hopefully it will be BUT....I'm glad to have had the opportunity to get to know you all over there (and abroad) first so we could all be together in one place here. I've said it a few times and I'll say it again. Thank you ALL for being here to make this place "work". Without the members....this place (or any other place for that matter) is nothing. I do appreciate everyone that has responded in this thread so far for keeping things on an even keel and hopefully it all stays that way in future responses.

I agree, we need to keep our replies polite towards FSM, the site has a future but it must go thru some growing pains. I harbor no ill towards the leadership, staff, or any member on the site. I hope they find a way to right things. Great people there, great people here. Breaks down to simply making a choice.

Some fine people over there. I don't think I was plugged in enough to really be affected by anything to negative. I will 100% AGREE with the ads issue. OMG. This place is a breath of fresh air.

I think I joined FSM late enough to not see much of the negativity that had been there in the past, and it has been one of my favorite forums until I got invited to join MSC. Now MSC is definitely my favorite for pretty much all the same reasons that Armornutii listed. The format of this forum itself is just friendlier. I think that helps with members being friendly...just because it looks and feels more relaxed, if that makes sense. I still go to FSM pretty regularly though to help as much as I can with technique, material, and tool questions...even though FSM seems to have more of a problem with people treating it like a search engine. I know I and others here have given input on questions from new members, and then we never hear from them again. LOL. Heh...its annoying, but I guess its just the way the internet is. There seems to be less of that here.

Those are some welcome and appreciated comments to hear fellas. I think the main difference between the forums in regard to the "touch & go" atmosphere is that we have staff here that will reach out to members from time to time if they've not been heard from in a while to see how they are doing and to let them know that they are missed. FSM has always struggled with a consistent staff presence. It's not the only forum with that problem but since FSM is more "commercialized" it gets a lot of the attention.
Like Perry mentioned though, I do hope they are able to get it all straightened out at some point.

I'm one of the originals on FSM. 2003. I think I've done well over 30 GB's. I haven't been very active on there for about a year. The ads were driving me batty. I'll pop in now and then but I've pretty much checked out.

I was there a long time ago. Some bad juju caused me to vacate as I could not tolerate the negativity from some. No point even subscribing to the mag anymore, its not monthly anymore and what you get is not worth the money. Sad really.
Here is the place to be.

I too am from the class of 2003. I will say I'm the source of some friction as I could no longer tolerate the BS from one individual and kinda went off. Once in 20 years isn't bad. The post frequency is falling off quite a bit. I still visit and post a bit but I'm a SPA and MSC fan. I am considering not renewing as well - mostly due to the bait and switch regarding less hardcopy but hey you get digital stuff... and then you don't.

Yup, I hear you...Like others, I joined FSM first, been there for many years, learned tons. But, somehow, the whole thing went somehow, if not downhill then just somehow sideways to me. Lost that something...MSC has much more homey feel.

It's not too bad here but I've gotta say that it helped out on FSM the most. It got to where I couldn't navigate well at all on there for all the ads.

The lack of response from any of the FSM editorial staff on their own forum is very telling to me. The FSM thread. link

Yeesh! Very good points being made alright, and I definitely agree with you that forum moderation/ staff presence is severely lacking over there. My point for putting that statement in there is because I've been on other forums where FSM as well as other forums were brought up in threads and it became a total mess. By the time the thread was either locked or deleted entirely the discussion had turned into a complete bashing session. Right or wrong, it was terrible. I was merely bringing to light the fact that you all are keeping this discussion mature and productive so far and it's appreciated.

Let's just say that the FSM forum old gray mare aint what she used to be. Next year I will have been on there 20 years. Like it was said above, it is a gateway forum. Many a good time was had online there. But like all good things, folks came and went and the fun factor wore off. Last year I was moderated for something like a six to nine month period without ever being told why. It was never for a violation of any posted rules. I can guess, but seriously, I'm a full grown adult, so I could take whatever would be said by the powers that be there. Being moderated while trying to run or while participating in any GB is pretty much a killer for any activity on those. Let's just say that the experience left me with some very bad vibes towards the folks in charge there. I still check in, just don't post anywhere near as much as I once did there. I'm quite happy to have found this place.

I went to FSM to read that thread referenced above - WOW with the pop up ads everywhere! Makes it nearly unreadable.
This forum is a modeling forum. No 229 threads, no Manstein's Revenge, none of the extraneous BS.

I have never been to FSM, so I can't say anything about it. Clicked on the link out of curiosity to read some of the posts. I had no pop-ups or ads, not even a notification a pop-up had been blocked and I didn't do any alterations to my Google Chrome, just the standard setup. Maybe it's my anti virus program covering me from that, I dunno?
