Another long title... I'm only going to call it Dugger. This is a reprint of a kit from the early 80's I believe. There was an anime or manga. I've been working on it off and on, in-between the other things, for a few months. Realized yesterday that it's almost ready for paint. Figured I would share. I bought it because I wanted to work on something a little different. When I received it I was a little shocked to see it was not a snapfit. Everything has to be glued. The kit has questionable fit. Each part is 2 pieces that glue together split down the center. Sanding is unavailable. Add it takes forever. I've sanded this kit more then I've sanded any other kit. But in the end it will be worth it. These kits are awesome! I still have to do some clean up on the heavy sand grooves here and there. It even has decals, no stickers. Weird from Bandai.

These are fun to watch come together mz. There are tricks you and Neal have used on these in the weathering department that I’ve used in other genres.

Xabungle kits are from the early 1980s, where kits were glue together - they even threw in a teeny, tiny tube of glue made by the legendary Japanese adhesive maker Cemendyne. The thing about Xabungle kits is that they scrub up really nicely when built properly and weathered using modern methods. The Dugger Type will no doubt be no different under MZ3’s expert hands!

Hello Dugger! I look forward to see it painted… will it be exactly like the art box or you are thinking of a different paint scheme?

Similar paint scheme. I'm not going to try to color match, just what ever I have that's close. I'll probably do a little more chipping then I normally, just for fun.

Progress is slow on this one. I decided to play around with the paint, just to see what I can get out of it. First step is to brush on the primer. Mr surfacer 1000 mahogany. 1000 helps cover the sanding marks I'm too lazy to remove.

Nasty.... So all the major components are primed. It feels really weird doing it like this. I don't really care if the coverage is perfect, as I really only want some texture from this. I've started lightly sanding some of it. A couple of seams didn't sand well, a lot less then what I was expecting. There are some bubbles here and there. I'm not sure what's next.

So brushing the primer on did a decent job of leaving "texture" all over. I started spraying today... Tamiya Dark Iron on the gears, feet and a couple of other areas. The holiday blues have hit me really hard this year. I was hoping to bury my head in model building and work and just power my way through. But I've gone the completely opposite direction. I hate this time of year. I'll be alright. Just needed a little vent.

Painted hullred on the parts... I tried to vary the color by adding drops of red in, but the mahogany primer made itnall the same basic color. Whatever. It's all going to be covered and chipped. I oversprayed on to the dark iron, but I'm going to change that color anyway. It's not metallic enough for what I'm looking for.

Lots... First things was a shot of chipping fluid. I was out of hairspray and have had this stuff sitting around for a while. Then the brown parts got flat brown. Then a shot of brown mixed with red brown for fading. The yellowish parts got a mix of red brown and dark yellow. I sprayed it on a little thin, then went back over each area and faded each detail. Kinda worked. I left some mr surfacer 500 unsanded, I'm trying to make bad rust spots. Hopefully it works, I've never tried this before on a 1/100 scale. Next up is chipping. I've been thinking about adding a layer of super chipped paint over these colors. I may just do it to one of the forearms just to see what can be done. We'll see. I also repainted the dark iron parts with metallic grey. Looks better.

Enough of the blues!!! Chips and salsa... Chipping turned out pretty good. I'm not a fan of ak chipping fluid. Maybe it's too old or something else, but it seems to be very inconsistent. With an even coat over all parts, some areas don't chip at all while other areas seem to chip away after just a few seconds of exposure to water. After using water to do most of the chips, I bounced a set of tweezers off the surface to get some smaller random chips. I'm going to leave on most of the residue from the process, it's giving color variations that look too cool to remove. I'll seal all this in later today and fix the metallic parts tomorrow or whenever.

Thanks guys. More... Last night I finished all the little bits of detail painting. There's not much, but it looks cool painted up. Most of it will probably be covered in grime and dirt. I topcoated with some aqua gloss and now I'm letting it sit until tomorrow. The kit came with decals, but they are pretty thick. So I'll try a couple out and decide from there if I'll use them or not. I also painted the exhaust pipe... yes exhaust pipe. I thought it was weird too. Basecoat of hull red, then burnt sienna oil paint, then a dash of rust pigments. Then soaked in enamel thinner. I'll brush off the excess tomorrow when it's completely dry. I also gave it a new antenna. The plastic one was bad. A little piece of guitar string, a bit of stretched plastic tube from a cotton swab and a ball of mr surfacer on the tip. Inplan on tying it down with some string after it's all painted.

Having an exhaust pipe is not at all strange for a “real robot”. It’s those little details that anchor them to the real world. The mechs in Dougram had gas turbine engines turning electrical generators - hybrids more than a decade before the Prius!

Man you've got this whole weathering thing DOWN!!! This looks nothing short of amazing mz. All this time I've been building military subjects and never once used the chipping method using hairspray like I see alot of folks do. Fantastic work and thank you for sharing your processes bud.

G, I still think it's weird. But this kit also has pioneer tools, stowage and a towing hook.
406, thank you. Funny thing, I never used these chipping techniques on any of the armor I used to do.
Brett, they do turn out nice. But the amount of sanding and filling and sanding and filling and sanding is awful. Honestly the paint is covering alot of awfulness I just didn't want to deal with. Brushing the primer on covered alot of it. The chips blend in the rest.
I did decals last night, I'll post pics later.

So the flat made the gunmetal look a little better. Kind of hard to see irl, but like Instated, alot if not most of these will be covered in rust. I used mr color/topcoat ultra smooth flat. I sprayed it on the upper part first to test. Once it looked good I went ahead and used the gunmetal pencil on the rest of the parts then sprayed them. After they dried I started in on the grime. I made a wash of raw umber and blue oils. I gave it a pin wash a few days ago, forgot to do any pics. But I made a larger batch of the wash and let it sit for a couple of days. Before I started on this I gave everything a buff oil filter. Lightened up the colors every so slightly. I love making this. I soaked the gears, I really want them messy as possible. Then made streaks with it in areas where the gears would leak and other places. I did a lot more then pictured, I just didn't get pics of it.

To say that all of the processes you’ve used so far make for a VERY convincing look would simply be an understatement MZ. This is mind blowing and inspiring stuff man.
You mentioned that you have done armor in the past. Got any pictures of that?
